Vertical Aerospace, the Bristol-based company behind the Valo electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, just secured about $100 million in new financing commitments. The money comes from a mix of existing backers and new investors, and it's all aimed at one thing: getting this piloted, four-passenger air taxi certified and ready for commercial flight.
It's a big moment for the company, which has been making serious headway in the aerospace world. The funding round follows a string of successful test flights, including a piloted transition demonstration at the Farnborough International Airshow that turned heads. CEO Stuart Simpson summed up the mood: "Following the momentum generated by our progress over the last six months, including our piloted transition demonstrations at Farnborough, we are focused on converting operational progress and partner engagement into continued advancement of our certification and commercialisation strategy."
### Breaking Down the $100 Million Deal
The financing isn't one single check. It's actually a three-part package, each piece serving a specific purpose. Here's how it breaks down:
- **$40 million from Mudrick Capital Management** โ This comes through a convertible note facility, combining a recently closed $5 million draw with a $35 million accelerated draw planned by August 12, 2026. Note that this part is still non-binding, pending final paperwork.
- **$35 million in equity investment** โ A group of existing and new investors is buying units (one ordinary share plus one warrant) at $1.05 per unit. The offering is expected to close on or around August 11.
- **$25 million from Yorkville Advisors Global** โ This was issued through the company's preferred equity facility and settled on August 10.
Simpson says these financings give the company the "near-term flexibility" to execute its next phase. And honestly, that flexibility is crucial when you're trying to certify a brand-new type of aircraft.
### What Vertical Aerospace Actually Does
Founded in 2016, Vertical Aerospace is building the Valo, a piloted eVTOL with zero operating emissions. Think of it as a helicopter that runs on batteries and uses multiple rotors for lift and forward flight. The company is also working on a hybrid-electric version that would offer longer range and more mission flexibility.
They're not doing it alone, either. Vertical is partnering with aerospace heavyweights like Honeywell, Syensqo, and Sonaca for key systems, while handling the battery and propeller tech in-house.
### Real Progress, Not Just Hype
This isn't vaporware. Earlier this year, Vertical became only the second company globally to complete a piloted transition flight in a full-scale tiltrotor eVTOL. That's the tricky maneuver where the aircraft shifts from hovering to forward flight, and it's a huge technical hurdle.
At Farnborough, they went even further, completing five successful demonstration flights in five days, including the first public piloted eVTOL transition flights at the show. That kind of public validation matters when you're trying to convince regulators and investors that your tech actually works.
### Beyond the Money: Government Support and Defense Deals
Vertical is also in advanced talks with the UK government for up to $13.5 million in support for its first full-scale production facilities, plus additional backing for next-generation charging tech. On the defense side, they've expanded their work through a partnership with Near Earth Autonomy, an autonomous flight systems provider, and the UK Ministry of Defence has shown interest in their hybrid-electric and autonomous capabilities.
They're also joining VERTI-GO, a Honeywell-led European initiative focused on integrating eVTOL aircraft into European airspace. That's a smart move, since airspace integration is often the bottleneck for these projects.
### What the Money Will Actually Fund
The capital will go toward the Critical Design Review, which establishes the certifiable design baseline for the aircraft. That's the step that lets them build and test certification-conforming aircraft. They'll also use the funds to open an expanded Energy Centre that triples battery production capacity, develop future production capabilities in the UK, and retrofit their third prototype for hybrid-electric flight testing in the first half of 2027.
It's a lot of moving parts, but the pieces are coming together. With this funding in place, Vertical Aerospace looks poised to keep pushing toward the day when electric air taxis are a normal sight in the sky.
