The Harpenden-based AgriTech startup just landed $540,000 in new funding to help small livestock farms turn organic waste into renewable energy. The round breaks down to roughly $311,000 from the British Design Fund, plus an Innovate UK Investor Partnership grant and additional backing from existing investor Beeches Group. ### The Problem With Traditional Anaerobic Digestion Here's the thing about most anaerobic digestion systems: they're built for massive operations. We're talking industrial-scale farms with thousands of animals. For a smallholder running 50 or 100 cows, these systems are way too expensive, too complex, and frankly, just too big. That leaves small farms stuck. They can't afford the green tech that would slash their costs and emissions, so they're left paying premium prices for energy and chemical fertilizers while regulators tighten the screws on waste management. Dr. Ilan Adler, founder and CEO of EcoNomad Solutions, saw this gap firsthand. "Small farms are under increasing pressure, yet they're often excluded from the renewable energy solutions available to larger operators," he says. "Our mission is to change that." ### The BioNomad: Waste-to-Energy for the Little Guy EcoNomad's flagship product, the BioNomad, is essentially a compact, decentralized anaerobic digestion unit. It captures methane that would otherwise escape into the atmosphere, converts organic waste into biogas for heating, cooking, or electricity, and produces high-quality biofertilizer as a byproduct. That's a triple win: lower energy costs, reduced reliance on chemical inputs, and a significant cut in methane emissions—which matters because agriculture is one of the largest sources of human-made methane globally. According to company data, a typical smallholding with around 50 cows could save several thousand dollars per year on energy and fertilizer expenses, depending on how the farm operates. The concept actually originated in Latin America, where Adler saw how simple, decentralized waste-to-energy systems supported rural livelihoods. He realized the core challenges were remarkably similar across developed and emerging markets, so he designed a system tailored for colder climates, smaller farms, and the regulatory landscape of the UK and Europe. ### A Growing Wave of AgriTech Investment This funding round isn't happening in a vacuum. European investors are pouring serious money into agricultural technology aimed at lowering the sector's environmental footprint. So far this year, we've seen: - $1.97 million for Sweden's Volta Greentech to reduce methane emissions from cattle - $1.45 million for Amsterdam-based Proba to scale fertilizer-related emissions reductions - $3.7 million for Berlin's Seqana to expand soil-health monitoring - $9.27 million for French regenerative-agriculture startup UBEES - $1.36 million for UK agricultural robotics company Versatile RobotX Combined with EcoNomad's raise, that's over $17 million flowing into the space. And the broader segment has attracted even more, including a $139 million regenerative-agriculture financing facility for Lithuania's InSoil. ### Why This Matters for the Future of Farming Damon Bonser, CEO of the British Design Fund, puts it well: "EcoNomad Solutions is addressing a major environmental and economic challenge with a solution that is both innovative and highly scalable. Their approach to decentralized anaerobic digestion has the potential to deliver meaningful impact for small farms globally." EcoNomad's technology is already deployed on more than 10 farms across the UK, with additional installations in the pipeline. The new funding will help accelerate product development and scale operations across the UK and Europe.
