Manchester-based Cytix raises $7M Series A led by Northern Gritstone to tackle AI-driven software change risks. The startup's platform helps enterprises assess and manage risk from rapid, machine-speed code changes.
The world of software development has completely changed. AI writes code at machine speed, deployment happens around the clock, and security teams are left scrambling to keep up. That's the problem Cytix, a Manchester-based cybersecurity startup, is determined to solve. And they just got a serious boost to do it.
Cytix announced a $7 million Series A funding round to accelerate its mission of tackling the risks that come with rapid software change. The round was led by Northern Gritstone, a UK venture firm focused on science and technology startups in the North of England. Existing investors Auriga Cyber Ventures and NPIF II โ PXN Equity Finance also participated, showing strong confidence in the company's direction.
### Why Software Change Is Suddenly a Huge Risk
Think about it this way: a few years ago, software updates were a careful, deliberate process. You'd plan, test, and then roll out changes. Now, with AI-assisted development and continuous delivery, code is changing constantly. Every single change carries potential risk, but most security tools are still designed to look for known vulnerabilities, not to assess the risk of a specific change.
Ben Armstrong, CEO of Cytix, explains it well. "AI-assisted development means change now happens at machine speed," he says. "Meanwhile, very few security leaders have control over, or understanding of, those changes from a risk perspective. Right now, existing tools can tell you what vulnerabilities you have, but can't tell you about the risk."
That's the gap Cytix is filling. Their platform doesn't just scan for weaknesses; it helps you understand the actual risk a specific change introduces. It answers three critical questions:
- Should security even care about this change?
- What risk does it introduce to the organization?
- What action should we take to mitigate it?
### The New Platform and What the Money Will Do
Cytix launched its change risk platform recently, and this funding will accelerate its rollout. The goal is to reach enterprises and regulated businesses where change governance isn't just a good ideaโit's a regulatory obligation. The company was founded in 2020, and it's already building partnerships with major players like NCC Group and KPMG to offer managed service options.
Duncan Johnson, CEO of Northern Gritstone, sees a clear trend. "The explosion of AI-assisted software development has led to a race to ensure software implementation remains secure," he notes. "Cytix's platform aims to help enterprises take a realistic approach, recognizing where change carries the most risk whilst allowing businesses to innovate."
### A Different Kind of Security Investment
This isn't just another cybersecurity funding round. It's about adapting security practices to the new reality of how software gets built. Traditional security models were created for a slower, more predictable world. They can't keep up with the pace of change we're seeing now.
The investors clearly believe in the thesis. They've seen it play out as companies struggle with the consequences of unmanaged change. And with the backing of Northern Gritstone, a firm known for supporting ambitious DeepTech companies, Cytix is well-positioned to make a real impact.
For security leaders, this is a signal. The tools you have might tell you what's wrong, but they don't tell you what's risky. As software continues to change at machine speed, having a solution that scales with that pace isn't just nice to haveโit's essential. Cytix is betting that they're the ones to provide it, and this fresh capital gives them a strong runway to prove it.
