Telum Therapeutics secures $18.5M Series A to fight hospital-acquired and ventilator-associated bacterial pneumonia with its novel APEX platform targeting superbugs like Acinetobacter baumannii.
Spanish biotech startup Telum Therapeutics just locked in an $18.5 million Series A round to take on some of the nastiest hospital-acquired infections out there. We're talking about the kind of bugs that make you sicker after you've already been admitted for something else.
This funding is a big deal because it targets two specific, life-threatening conditions: hospital-acquired bacterial pneumonia (HABP) and ventilator-associated bacterial pneumonia (VABP). These aren't your run-of-the-mill infections; they're caused by superbugs that have grown resistant to most standard antibiotics.
### Who's backing this?
The round was led by the AMR Action Fund, a group specifically focused on fighting antimicrobial resistance. They brought in new investor Inveready and got continued support from existing backers like Invivo Partners, CDTI with its SICC Innvierte, Clave Capital, and Sodena. It's a solid mix of international and Spanish life sciences investors, tech-focused funds, and public institutions.
"We're thrilled to have AMR Action Fund and Inveready on board," said Dr. Subhendu Basu, CEO of Telum Therapeutics. "Their deep expertise in antimicrobial resistance, along with our existing partners, gives us real confidence in our APEX platform's potential to create a new class of therapies."
### What's the big picture?
Telum isn't alone in this space. The European biotech scene has been buzzing with similar rounds this year. Here's a quick look at some comparables:
- **mbiomics** (Bavaria): Raised $31 million Series A for microbiome-based therapies targeting chronic diseases.
- **Generare** (Paris): Closed $20.6 million Series A to expand its microbial-genome drug discovery platform.
- **Helical** (London): Snagged $8.6 million in seed funding for AI-driven pharma R&D.
- **Gate2Brain** (Barcelona): Raised $7.2 million for its brain tumor treatment and blood-brain barrier delivery tech.
- **Avenue Biosciences** (Finland): Announced a $5 million seed extension for protein engineering.
Combined with Telum's round, that's roughly $90.8 million in disclosed funding across European biotech, therapeutic platforms, and drug discovery companies in 2026 alone. It shows real momentum, especially in Spain, where Gate2Brain is also making moves.
### The science behind it
Founded in 2019, Telum is going after a particularly nasty pathogen: Acinetobacter baumannii. This is a multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bug that causes serious infections in hospitalized patients worldwide. It's tough to treat and often shrugs off first-line antibiotics.
"This financing gives us a clear path through Phase 1 development for our lead program targeting Acinetobacter baumannii HABP/VABP," Basu explained. "It also lets us advance our broader pipeline against both Gram-negative and Gram-positive pathogens."
Henry Skinner, CEO of the AMR Action Fund, added: "Acinetobacter baumannii is one of the most formidable bacterial threats in modern medicine. It's clinically challenging, often resistant to first-line therapies, and progress has been slow. We're encouraged by Telum's novel approach."
### What's next?
The company's proprietary APEX platform creates biologically derived, protein-based antimicrobials. These could overcome key limitations of traditional antibiotics, like resistance and toxicity, offering new hope for patients facing life-threatening infections. With this cash, Telum will push its lead candidate through Phase 1 trials, gathering critical safety and translational data to support later-stage development.
