A Swiss startup just raised $17M to buy NVIDIA servers, deploy them in Iceland on renewable power, and rent out AI compute capacity on long-term contracts. Here's why location matters.

You know that feeling when you ask ChatGPT something and get an answer in seconds? It feels like magic, right? But behind that magic is a very physical reality: thousands of servers stacked in warehouses, humming away, drawing massive amounts of power and generating heat. And here's the thing — there just aren't enough of them. That's the problem a new Swiss company called AI Infrastructure Capital AG is trying to solve. The startup just closed a funding round worth around $17 million (€16 million) and is officially launching to tackle what many in the industry call the real bottleneck for artificial intelligence: compute capacity. ### The Simple Idea Behind a Complex Problem AI Infrastructure Capital AG doesn't build software or train models. Instead, it does something far more tangible: it buys enterprise-grade NVIDIA GPU servers, installs them at sites powered by renewable energy, and rents out the computing power on long-term contracts. Think of it like buying apartment buildings and leasing them out, except the tenants are AI companies and the apartments are servers. Founded in June 2026 by Cédric Waldburger and Roald Parmentier, the company is based in Pfäffikon, Switzerland. Waldburger is no stranger to the tech world — he runs the venture capital firm Tomahawk.VC, which invests in early-stage technology companies. Parmentier brings deep operational experience from data center management and hardware procurement. "Artificial intelligence tends to get discussed as something abstract. Underneath it is a very concrete question: are there enough servers, and are they in the right place? We make sure there are more of them," Waldburger said. ### Why Iceland? Here's where the strategy gets interesting. The company chose Iceland as its primary location for deploying these servers, and it wasn't an accident. Iceland runs almost entirely on renewable energy — geothermal and hydroelectric power. That means the electricity powering these AI workloads doesn't contribute to carbon emissions. But there's another advantage that's often overlooked: the cold climate. In Iceland, the outdoor air does much of the cooling that would otherwise require expensive, energy-hungry systems. In places like Frankfurt or Dublin, data centers have to spend millions on cooling infrastructure. In Iceland, nature handles a lot of that for free. "Location and cooling decide whether the operation makes economic sense. In Iceland, renewable power comes together with cold outside air. Over the life of the machines, that is a structural advantage," said Parmentier. ### The Funding and the Team Valyou, an investment foundation based in Rapperswil, is the anchor investor in this round. Its managing director, Yonten Wagma, is joining the company's board. Entrepreneur Fabian Villiger, also from Rapperswil, completes the board as the fourth member. The company's approach is refreshingly straightforward: - Buy servers outright (no leasing, no debt) - Deploy them in Iceland on renewable power - Sign long-term contracts with AI companies - Keep operating costs low through natural cooling That last point is crucial. Once the servers are installed and the contracts are signed, the operating costs stay permanently low. The combination of cheap renewable power and free cooling gives the company a structural edge that's hard to replicate elsewhere. ### Why This Matters for AI The AI industry has a supply problem. Every time you use ChatGPT, Claude, or any other AI tool, your request runs on a physical server that sits somewhere, draws power, and has to be cooled. There are too few of these servers, and they're becoming the real bottleneck for the entire industry. AI Infrastructure Capital AG is betting that solving this supply problem is a solid business. With the funding in place and the servers already deployed in Iceland, the company says it has already rented out its compute capacity on long-term contracts. It's a smart bet. As AI adoption continues to grow, the demand for compute will only increase. And companies that can provide that compute reliably, sustainably, and cost-effectively will be in a strong position.
