NUS Enterprise partners with UnternehmerTUM to launch a new NUSX outpost in Munich, connecting Singapore and European DeepTech ecosystems with investment and talent links.

Singapore's NUS Enterprise is making a bold move into Europe. Through its global arm, NUSX, the university is partnering with UnternehmerTUM โ€” one of Europe's biggest innovation hubs โ€” to connect the Singapore and Munich startup ecosystems. And honestly, this could be a big deal for DeepTech founders on both sides. ### Why Munich, and Why Now? Munich isn't just a pretty city with great beer gardens. It's one of Europe's top five tech ecosystems according to the Global Tech Ecosystem Index 2026, and it ranks 11th globally for AI. That's serious firepower. For NUSX ventures, having a base there means direct access to European partners, investors, and markets. For Munich-based startups, it's a doorway into Singapore and the wider Asian ecosystem. Not a bad trade. ### A New Outpost at Munich Urban Colab At the heart of this partnership is NUSX's second global outpost, located at the Munich Urban Colab โ€” an 118,000-square-foot innovation center jointly run by UnternehmerTUM and the City of Munich. From there, NUSX will plug NUS DeepTech ventures into the broader UnternehmerTUM and TUM Venture Labs network. Think industry partners, technical expertise, and real-world validation opportunities in Europe. And it goes both ways. TUM Venture Labs is exploring a presence at the NUS iยณ building in Singapore, giving Munich startups a direct entry point into Asia. ### Investment Links Are Deepening Too This isn't just about office space. NUS is in advanced talks with a Munich-based VC firm closely tied to UnternehmerTUM to join its $110 million NUS VC Programme as the fifth partner. That means NUS-affiliated founders could get stronger ties to European capital โ€” and European investors get a closer look at what's cooking in Singapore. > "Through reciprocal outposts, deeper investment links, and new opportunities for our students and startups, we are bringing talent, research and capital closer together," said Dr. Tan Sian Wee, NUS Senior Vice President (Innovation & Enterprise). The partnership's initial focus? Biotech, AI, and semiconductors โ€” all areas where both ecosystems are strong. TUM ranks first in Germany for data science and AI, and its School of Life Sciences houses 10 of the university's 17 most-cited researchers. ### Talent Takes Center Stage Beyond money and infrastructure, this partnership is about people. NUS Overseas Colleges (NOC) Munich has been running since 2017, connecting nearly 120 NUS students and over 90 TUM students through exchanges. Now, NOC students will get even more hands-on venture-building experience in Munich. Alumni have already built ventures like Factorem, so the track record is there. ### The Bigger Picture Singapore's RIE2030 strategy commits $27 billion over five years to research, innovation, and enterprise โ€” including flagship programs in semiconductors and health. Pair that with Munich's deep tech scene, and you've got a pretty compelling bridge between two continents. For founders, this means more access. More partners. More markets. And more chances to validate, build, and scale from Singapore to Europe โ€” and back again. If you're building in DeepTech, this is a partnership worth watching.
