Paris-based Apolownia secures $1.1M to scale high-integrity coastal restoration. Its BlueRizon project in Indonesia targets 4,000+ hectares of mangroves, potentially benefiting 100,000+ people.
When we talk about climate tech, the conversation usually centers on software, apps, and algorithms. But sometimes, the most impactful solutions start with something far simpler: mud, roots, and a whole lot of patience.
That's the bet Apolownia is making. This Paris-based startup just closed its first Seed round at roughly $1.1 million (€1 million), and they're using that capital to tackle one of the planet's most pressing issues—the rapid loss of coastal ecosystems.
### The Funding Details
The round came together with backing from LITA, Bpifrance, and a group of business angels and individual investors. It's not a massive mega-round, but for a company focused on restoration rather than pure tech, it's a meaningful vote of confidence.
Théo Derache, CEO and co-founder, puts it plainly: "At a time when everyone is chasing efficiency and technology has never been more accessible, it is presence on the ground that makes the difference. By mastering the entire chain, we are our clients' single point of contact, from the field to the measurement of impact."
That's the core thesis here—hands-on work beats purely digital solutions.
### What Apolownia Actually Does
Founded in 2024, Apolownia is a mission-driven company. They help organizations transition to a sustainable future by restoring natural carbon sinks and regenerating biodiversity through end-to-end climate projects.
The environmental market is shifting. Companies aren't just being pushed to reduce emissions anymore; they're expected to go further. That means sequestering residual carbon and restoring ecosystems to meet climate targets, especially those tied to the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).
But here's the catch: companies are demanding high-integrity carbon projects. They want things that are:
- Transparent and measurable
- Auditable and additional
- Durable and genuinely impactful
Apolownia answers that demand by specializing in coastal ecosystem restoration and blue carbon. Their model blends scientific and technological expertise—satellite remote sensing, geospatial analysis, modeling, drones, 3D modeling, advanced MRV (monitoring, reporting, and verification), digital tools, and AI—with on-the-ground work. That includes local teams, community engagement, biodiversity and land-tenure work, benefit sharing, and local governance.
### The BlueRizon Project
The flagship initiative is BlueRizon, a mangrove restoration project in Indonesia targeting more than 4,000 hectares (about 9,900 acres). That's roughly 15.5 square miles of coastal land being brought back to life.
Developed with local partners, the official launch is slated for the third quarter of 2026. But the groundwork is already underway. More than 3,000 people are currently involved in implementation, and the project could ultimately benefit over 100,000 people through climate resilience, erosion control, adaptation to sea-level rise, biodiversity restoration, and local economic development.
### Why This Matters
The carbon market has a reputation problem. Too many projects promise big results and deliver little. Apolownia's response is to centralize the entire development chain—site identification, feasibility, structuring, monitoring, and long-term follow-up. By keeping everything in-house, they argue, the quality and predictability of projects improve dramatically.
It's a bold claim, but the logic holds. Fragmentation is a real issue in this sector. When different entities handle different parts of a project, accountability gets blurry. Apolownia wants to be the single point of contact, from the field to the final impact measurement.
### What's Next
With this fresh capital, the company plans to scale its model, push forward on BlueRizon, and strengthen its structuring and deployment capacity. They're also doubling down on science, technology, and monitoring.
Long-term, Apolownia aims to become an international benchmark for high-integrity restoration—not just mangroves, but seagrass meadows, coastal peatlands, and coral reefs. It's an ambitious vision, but if they can pull it off, the impact could be enormous.
For now, the focus is on getting BlueRizon off the ground and proving that the model works. If it does, this $1.1 million Seed round might look like one of the smartest investments in the climate space.
