NUS Enterprise's NUSX is partnering with UnternehmerTUM to connect Singapore and Munich startup ecosystems, giving DeepTech founders access to European investors and markets.
Singapore's NUS Enterprise is making a bold move into Europe. Through its global arm NUSX, the university is teaming up with UnternehmerTUM, one of Europe's most respected innovation hubs, to bridge two startup ecosystems that rarely cross paths.
The partnership connects Singapore and Munich, giving NUS DeepTech ventures direct access to European partners, investors, and markets. And it works both ways—Munich-based startups get a clearer path into Asia too.
### Why Munich, and Why Now
Munich isn't a random choice. It consistently ranks among Europe's top five tech ecosystems, and it's 11th globally for AI. That's serious firepower.
The city's strengths in research, technology, and venture creation make it a natural landing spot for founders who want to validate their ideas in Europe before scaling further.
### A New Home Base at Munich Urban Colab
The centerpiece of the deal is NUSX's second global outpost, located at the Munich Urban Colab—a massive 118,000-square-foot innovation center run jointly by UnternehmerTUM and the City of Munich.
From there, NUSX will plug its DeepTech ventures into the wider UnternehmerTUM and TUM Venture Labs ecosystem. That means access to industry partners, technical expertise, and real-world opportunities to test technologies in the European market.
The connection goes both ways. TUM Venture Labs is exploring a presence at the NUS i³ building in Singapore, which would give Munich startups a direct entry point into Asia's innovation scene.
### Building on an Existing Relationship
This isn't a cold introduction. NUS Enterprise and the Technical University of Munich (TUM) have been working together for years through the NUS Overseas Colleges (NOC) program.
NOC Munich launched back in 2017 and has since connected nearly 120 NUS students and over 90 TUM students through exchanges. Alumni have gone on to build ventures like Factorem.
"This collaboration with UnternehmerTUM builds on our longstanding ties with the Technical University of Munich as NUSX deepens its global venture-building network," said Dr. Tan Sian Wee, NUS Senior Vice President (Innovation & Enterprise).
"Through reciprocal outposts, deeper investment links, and new opportunities for our students and startups, we are bringing talent, research and capital closer together."
### Investment Links Are Getting Stronger
Money matters, and this partnership is putting real capital behind the collaboration. NUS is in advanced talks with a Munich-based venture capital firm closely affiliated with UnternehmerTUM to join the $110 million NUS VC Programme as its fifth VC partner.
That would expand the network of international investors backing NUS-affiliated ventures and give founders stronger ties to European capital.
The partnership is designed to support startups across the entire journey—from talent development and research commercialization all the way to investment and global market entry.
### Where the Focus Is
The initial focus areas are biotech, AI, and semiconductors. These aren't random picks—they reflect strengths on both sides.
- TUM ranks first in Germany for data science and AI
- Its School of Life Sciences houses 10 of the university's 17 most-cited researchers
- Singapore's RIE2030 strategy commits $27 billion over five years to research and innovation
### What This Means for Founders
For NUS students, the partnership opens doors to hands-on venture-building experience in Munich. For DeepTech founders, it's a shortcut to European partners and capital.
And for Munich startups? A direct line into Singapore's ecosystem and the broader Asian market.
It's a two-way street, and that's what makes it interesting. Most international partnerships are one-sided. This one seems designed to create real value on both ends—talent, research, and capital flowing in both directions.
The collaboration is still ramping up, but the groundwork is already laid. If you're a founder in DeepTech, this is a bridge worth watching.
