NUS Enterprise's NUSX is opening its second global outpost in Munich through a partnership with UnternehmerTUM, connecting Singapore and European DeepTech ecosystems with shared access to investors, talent, and markets.
Singapore's NUS Enterprise just made a move that could reshape how DeepTech startups cross between Asia and Europe. Through its global arm NUSX, the university is partnering with UnternehmerTUM โ Munich's heavyweight innovation engine โ to build a two-way bridge between the two ecosystems.
And honestly? This isn't just another handshake between universities. It's the kind of infrastructure that founders actually need.
### What's Actually Happening
The centerpiece is NUSX's second global outpost, based at the Munich Urban Colab โ an 118,000-square-foot innovation center co-founded by UnternehmerTUM and the City of Munich.
From there, NUS DeepTech ventures get direct access to industry partners, technical expertise, and a real shot at validating their tech in the European market.
But here's the part that makes this interesting: it works both ways. TUM Venture Labs is exploring a presence at the NUS iยณ building in Singapore. That gives Munich-based founders a front door into Asia's innovation scene.
### Three Pillars, One Goal
The partnership focuses on three things:
- **Reciprocal outposts** โ physical bases in both cities
- **Investment links** โ NUS is in advanced talks with a Munich VC firm to join its $110 million NUS VC Programme as a fifth partner
- **Talent development** โ more NUS students getting hands-on venture-building experience in Munich
Initial efforts center on biotech, AI, and semiconductors. That's no accident. TUM ranks first in Germany for data science and AI, and its School of Life Sciences houses 10 of the university's 17 most-cited researchers.
### The Relationship Isn't New
NUS and TUM have been connected since 2017 through the NUS Overseas Colleges program. Nearly 120 NUS students and more than 90 TUM students have swapped cities since then. Alumni have gone on to build ventures like Factorem.
> "Through reciprocal outposts, deeper investment links, and new opportunities for our students and startups, we are bringing talent, research and capital closer together," said Dr. Tan Sian Wee, NUS Senior Vice President (Innovation & Enterprise).
### Why Munich, Why Now
Munich ranks in Europe's top five tech ecosystems and 11th globally for AI. For Singapore-based founders eyeing European expansion, it's a smart landing pad โ strong in research, flush with capital, and plugged into the continent's startup network.
The timing also lines up with Singapore's RIE2030 strategy, which commits $27 billion over five years to research and innovation, including flagship programs in semiconductors and health.
### The Bottom Line
For founders in either region, this opens doors that used to require years of networking to crack. Access to partners, capital, and markets โ on both sides of the world โ is now a plane ride away, not a pipe dream.
If you're building DeepTech and thinking about going global, this is one partnership worth watching.
