NUS Enterprise expands into Munich through a new UnternehmerTUM partnership, giving DeepTech ventures access to European investors, markets, and talent.

Singapore's startup engine is making a bold move into Europe. NUS Enterprise, the entrepreneurial arm of the National University of Singapore, is expanding its global footprint as NUSX through a fresh partnership with UnternehmerTUM. And honestly, this one's worth paying attention to. The deal connects two serious innovation ecosystems: Singapore and Munich. For NUS DeepTech ventures, it means a much shorter path to European partners, investors, and real market opportunities. For Munich-based startups, it opens a door straight into Asia. ### Munich Is Having a Moment Munich isn't just a nice place to visit. It ranks among Europe's top five in the Global Tech Ecosystem Index 2026 and sits 11th globally for AI. That's not hype, that's infrastructure. Its strengths in research, technology, and venture creation make it a natural landing spot for NUSX ventures hunting for capital and partners across Europe. Think of it as a launchpad, not just a stopover. The partnership focuses on three things: - Reciprocal outposts (physical spaces in both regions) - Investment ties that actually move money - Talent development across borders Initial efforts zero in on biotech, AI, and semiconductors. Makes sense. Those are the areas where both ecosystems already punch above their weight. ### A New NUSX Base in Munich Here's the centerpiece. NUSX is opening its second global outpost at the Munich Urban Colab, an 118,000-square-foot innovation center co-founded by UnternehmerTUM and the City of Munich. From there, NUSX will plug NUS DeepTech ventures into the wider UnternehmerTUM and TUM Venture Labs ecosystem. That means industry partners, technical expertise, and a real shot at validating tech in the European market. And it goes both ways. TUM Venture Labs, a joint effort between the Technical University of Munich and UnternehmerTUM, is exploring a representative presence at the NUS iยณ building in Singapore. That would give Munich ventures a direct entry point into Asia's innovation scene. ### The Relationship Isn't New This builds on a partnership that's been quietly working for years. NOC Munich launched in 2017 and has connected nearly 120 NUS students and more than 90 TUM students through exchanges. Alumni have gone on to build ventures like Factorem. Dr. Tan Sian Wee, NUS Senior Vice President (Innovation & Enterprise), put it simply: > "Through reciprocal outposts, deeper investment links, and new opportunities for our students and startups, we are bringing talent, research and capital closer together. This gives founders greater access to the partners, expertise and markets they need to validate, build and scale DeepTech ventures from Singapore." ### Money Talks Too Investment is a big part of this. NUS is in advanced talks with a Munich-based VC firm closely tied to UnternehmerTUM to join the โ‚ฌ102 million NUS VC Programme as its fifth VC partner. That's roughly $110 million, and it would give founders a much stronger link to European capital. The partnership is designed to support ventures across the whole journey, from talent development and research commercialization to investment and global market entry. ### Why Biotech, AI, and Semiconductors? Because both regions are strong there. TUM ranks first in Germany for data science and AI. Its School of Life Sciences houses 10 of the university's 17 most-cited researchers. These areas also line up with NUSX's priorities and Singapore's RIE2030 strategy, which commits โ‚ฌ25 billion (about $27 billion) over five years to research, innovation, and enterprise, including flagship programs in semiconductors and health. ### Talent Gets a Real Boost NOC students will get hands-on venture-building experience in Munich. That's not classroom theory. It's real exposure to European markets, investors, and founders. For anyone watching the EU Inc proposal and European startup incorporation trends, this kind of cross-border talent flow matters. It's how ecosystems grow stronger, not just bigger.
