London-based Reactive Technologies lands €19M ($20.5M) from the European Investment Bank to scale its GridVerix platform, aiming to cut blackout risks and boost clean energy across Europe.
Reactive Technologies, a London-based power-grid technology company, just secured €19 million (about $20.5 million) in venture debt from the European Investment Bank (EIB). The money will help push its GridVerix platform, which aims to cut the risk of blackouts, lower grid operating costs, and boost clean energy across Europe.
### What GridVerix Actually Does
At its core, GridVerix gives grid operators real-time measurements of two critical stability indicators. The first is inertia — the stored kinetic energy in generators that helps the system ride out sudden disturbances. The second is voltage strength and stability across different parts of the grid. Think of it like a continuous health check for the power network, catching weak spots before they turn into outages.
“EIB support comes at a critical moment,” said Reactive Technologies CEO Marc Borrett. “The rapid growth of renewable energy and large power consumers such as data centres are making Europe’s grids more complex to manage. By providing real-time measurements of grid stability, GridVerix can help operators keep the system secure, operate more efficiently and reduce costs for consumers.”
### Why This Matters Right Now
As more wind and solar power connect to Europe’s grids, the system gets harder to balance. GridVerix helps operators spot vulnerabilities early, integrate more renewables, and connect big electricity users like data centres without destabilizing the network. It also cuts down on renewable energy curtailment — the deliberate reduction of electricity generation — which saves money for consumers.
The EIB support comes as venture debt backed by the InvestEU programme and contributes to TechEU, the EIB Group’s push to accelerate investments in strategic technologies. “Europe needs electricity grids that can keep pace with the rapid growth of renewable energy,” said EIB Vice-President Karl Nehammer. “Reactive Technologies gives grid operators a much clearer picture of what is happening across their networks in real time. Our financing will help bring this European technology to more markets, reduce the risk of power outages and support the secure integration of more clean power.”
### Where the Money Goes
Of the €19 million loan, up to €7 million (about $7.5 million) will fund R&D at the company’s centre in Oulu, Finland. The remaining €12 million (roughly $13 million) will support deploying the technology across the European Union.
Founded in 2010 by Dr. Heikki Huomo and Borrett, Reactive Technologies is a Grid-Enhancing Technologies (GETs) company tackling energy transition, electrification, and accelerating load growth. Headquartered in London, it has commercial offices on both the East and West Coasts of the USA, plus in the UAE and Australia, and an R&D centre in Finland.

### The Bigger Picture
Europe’s grid is under pressure. More renewables mean more variability, and data centres are hungry for power. Reactive Technologies’ platform offers a way to manage that complexity without massive infrastructure upgrades. With EIB backing, the company can scale faster and bring its tech to more markets. For anyone watching EU Inc news or European startup incorporation, this deal shows how strategic tech funding is evolving — and why grid innovation is becoming a hot space.
