Linkener, a Valencia-based EnergyTech startup that digitises and optimises energy management for businesses, just closed a €7.5 million funding round. That's roughly $8.1 million at current exchange rates. The round was led by Klima Energy Transition Fund, Alantra's energy transition fund, with GoHub Ventures staying on as a shareholder. José Ignacio Ruiz, CEO of Linkener, didn't mince words: "This funding round will allow us to accelerate the transformation of a highly fragmented sector, where energy management remains rooted in practices from 40 years ago. We want businesses to have reliable data and technology to understand how much they spend on energy, anticipate their costs and make better decisions." ### So, what does Linkener actually do? Founded in 2011, Linkener has built an Intelligent Energy Management System (SIGE) with proprietary remote metering technology. It lets businesses and organisations measure consumption using their own data, digitise and validate bills, analyse energy supply arrangements, and receive alerts, recommendations and savings proposals to help them reduce and control energy costs. But they don't stop at software. The company also has an engineering team that turns identified savings opportunities into practical projects. They've delivered more than 400 solar PV and battery storage projects across Spain. That's a lot of panels and batteries. Linkener reports that it serves more than 2,000 customers, ranging from self-employed professionals to large companies. Together, they manage 10,000 energy supply points and 1.7 TWh annually. To put that in perspective, 1.7 TWh is enough electricity to power about 150,000 average US homes for a year. ### Why this matters for the services sector According to Linkener, there's significant scope to digitise and optimise energy management in the services sector. Monitoring and controlling consumption can deliver 20% savings and more efficient cost management. That's not pocket change. For businesses struggling with rising energy costs, a 20% cut could be a lifesaver. Iñigo Echaniz, Partner at Klima, Alantra's energy transition fund, sees the bigger picture: "Energy management for businesses and organisations remains a highly fragmented market with enormous potential for digitisation. Linkener combines proprietary technology, independent energy data and direct relationships with thousands of customers, creating a distinctive foundation on which to add further capabilities and solutions. Our investment aims to support the team in this next stage of growth, both organically and through acquisitions, with the goal of building a leading technology platform for energy management." ### What's next for Linkener? With this investment, the company plans to accelerate the development of its technology and proprietary artificial intelligence models for energy management. They aim to use AI and advanced data analytics to automate the processing of energy information and bills, detect anomalies, and identify opportunities for optimisation and savings for its customers. Linkener also revealed that through M&A, it intends to add new products and companies that complement its existing business and broaden the solutions available to customers. This will strengthen its product, technology and commercial capabilities. > "We want to bring transparency and results to the thousands of businesses and organisations that do not want to manage their energy solely through a monthly bill that is biased, incomplete and fails to provide the full picture." – José Ignacio Ruiz, CEO of Linkener The company aims to grow both organically and through acquisitions. According to Ruiz, the goal is to bring "transparency and results" to businesses tired of opaque energy bills. ### The takeaway Energy management is one of those back-office functions that often gets ignored until costs spiral out of control. Linkener's raise shows investors believe there's a better way. With AI, data, and a growing customer base, the startup is positioning itself as a one-stop shop for businesses that want to take control of their energy spend. And if they can pull it off, they might just make those 40-year-old practices a thing of the past.
