Food safety has a silent enemy, and it's hiding in your grain. Mycotoxins, especially aflatoxins, are toxic compounds produced by certain molds. Aflabox, founded in July 2024 by Fabrizio Cardillo and Luca Alinovi, just closed a $1.43 million Seed round (converted from โ‚ฌ1.35 million) to scale its portable, AI-powered detection platform. The funding came through FoodSeed, a program within CDP Venture Capital's National Accelerator Network managed by Eatable Adventures, with additional support from Farming Future. ### The Problem With Traditional Testing Here's the frustrating reality: most aflatoxin tests require lab infrastructure that simply doesn't exist where contamination risks are highest. Think rural collection centers in Africa or smallholder farms in Southeast Asia. By the time results come back days later, decisions have already been made โ€” often without reliable data. Cardillo and Alinovi saw this firsthand. "When testing is distant, expensive and slow, too many decisions across the supply chain are made without reliable data," they said. That observation sparked the idea for Aflabox. The founders wanted to move testing out of the lab and into the field. It has also completed initial validation of its AI models and filed a patent application. "Our ambition is to build a bridge between Italian technology, African supply chains and international markets," the founders explained. "Transforming agricultural quality into data that is fast, accessible, geolocated and actionable for businesses, governments and institutions, directly where it is truly needed." ### What This Means for Global Food Safety The implications are significant. Aflatoxins are not just a quality issue โ€” they're a public health crisis in many developing regions. Chronic exposure has been linked to liver cancer and stunted growth in children. By making detection faster and more accessible, Aflabox could help prevent contaminated grain from entering the food supply in the first place. There's also an economic angle. Commodities that fail safety inspections lose value or get rejected outright. Real-time testing at collection points means fewer surprises at the border and better prices for farmers who can prove their crops are clean. ### The Road Ahead Aflabox is still young, but the trajectory is promising. The seed funding will help scale production, expand into new markets, and refine the AI models that power the platform. The company's focus on Africa โ€” where contamination risk is highest and testing infrastructure is thinnest โ€” positions it well for meaningful impact.
