Magnific (formerly Freepik) has hit $230M ARR without US VC funding. Learn how this Malaga-based AI platform is reshaping creative work and what it means for European startups.
What happens when a company rejects the standard playbook of chasing US venture capital and instead focuses on building something people actually want to use? You get Magnific, the rebranded powerhouse formerly known as Freepik, and its story is one that every European startup should pay attention to.
### From Stock Graphics to AI Powerhouse
Back in 2010, three friends in Malaga, Spain, started Freepik as a simple search engine for graphic resources. Fast forward 16 years, and that same company has completely reinvented itself. It's now Magnific, an all-in-one AI creative platform that combines image generation, video, audio, upscaling, collaboration tools, 3D features, and stock assets into a single production environment.
The numbers are jaw-dropping. Magnific reports $230 million in annual recurring revenue (ARR), over 1 million paid subscribers, and adoption by more than 250 enterprise clients. Who's using them? Big names like BBC, DeliveryHero, Guess, Mayoral, Huel, R/GA, Damm, and Job&Talent. And here's the kicker - they achieved all of this without a single round of US venture capital funding.
### The No-Collar Economy Is Real
Joaquin Cuenca, CEO of Magnific, has a way of framing this shift that sticks with you. "The industrial revolution created the blue-collar jobs and the digital revolution created the white-collar jobs," he says. "Creatives are about to become more powerful than anyone expected. That's the no-collar economy. The economy of people who don't wear a shirt collar. And it's already underway."
This isn't just marketing talk. Magnific is betting that AI tools will democratize creative production in ways we haven't fully grasped yet. Instead of replacing creative workers, these tools expand who gets to participate. The company reports that 72% of new creators joining the platform identify as beginners - a clear sign that the barriers to entry are crumbling.
### Real Projects, Real Results
You don't have to take Magnific's word for it. Their platform has already been used for some pretty impressive professional projects:
- The Chronicles of Bones, an original series by Phantom X produced entirely on the platform
- A Puma x Manchester City campaign produced by The Berry
- The Patchwright, a sci-fi production from Gossip Goblin
- An Alain Afflelou TV ad campaign produced by Xiaolongbao
- House of David, a series produced by The Wonder Project for Amazon Prime Video
- A Carl's Jr. campaign with Paris Hilton created by Native Foreign
These aren't just experiments. They're real commercial work being done by teams who've moved their creative workflows onto the platform.
### What's Driving the Growth?
The market is clearly moving toward integrated creative tools. Instead of hopping between separate AI apps for different tasks, teams want one place where they can generate assets, prototype visuals, and scale content across campaigns and markets. That's exactly what Magnific offers.
Their Business plan, launched in January 2026 for smaller teams, hit over 2,000 subscriptions in just six weeks. It's currently adding around 150 new teams per week. That kind of momentum suggests they've found a real product-market fit.
### The Vision Thing
Cuenca will be speaking at the EU-Startups Summit 2026 in Malta this May, with a keynote titled "When execution is worthless, vision is everything: how to start a business in the age of infinite AI." He'll draw on Freepik's journey from a stock content marketplace to an AI-powered platform, exploring how founders can define the right objectives and apply sound judgment in an era where AI handles more and more of the execution.
Andreessen Horowitz has already named Freepik the top generative AI web company in Europe by users. Magnific competes directly with US-based platforms like Midjourney, Runway, and Leonardo - but without taking a dime of American venture money.
"We started without any capital, three friends dreaming big," says Cuenca. "We didn't know what we'd build. We just knew we weren't comfortable staying still. We found new things to build. Now we'll find new stories to tell."
### What This Means for European Startups
Magnific's success sends a powerful message. You don't need to move to Silicon Valley or raise US venture capital to build a world-class AI company. Europe has the talent, the ambition, and increasingly, the capital to support ambitious founders. Cuenca puts it even more simply: "In the future, we will make films like we write books. One person with a vision and the tools to execute it."
That's the no-collar economy in action - and it's already here.
