Helsinki startup Ambio raises $5.5M to make recycled plastics procurement as predictable as buying virgin materials, using AI to build trust and transparency.

### Helsinki Startup Secures $5.5M to Revolutionize Recycled Plastics Procurement Ambio, a Helsinki-based startup, just raised €5.1 million (about $5.5 million) in seed funding. They're building an AI-powered platform to make buying recycled plastics as straightforward as buying virgin materials. The round was led by b2venture, with Montis and existing investor Lifeline Ventures joining in. "We are backing Ambio not only because of the talented team led by Tommi and Elmo but also because of the compounding competitive moat the business is built on: a proprietary dataset on recyclate quality, a principal model that builds trust with buyers and sellers, and an agentic engine that turns every transaction and quality data point into improved matchmaking," said Mathias Ockenfels, Partner at b2venture. "We are convinced that Ambio will become the central marketplace for recycled plastics in Europe and beyond." ### Why Recycled Plastics Are a Big Deal for Manufacturers Recycled plastics offer European manufacturers a trifecta of benefits: they're sustainable, often cheaper, and help meet tightening regulations. Plus, every tonne recycled and used in Europe stays in the European supply chain, boosting resilience and reducing dependence on imported fossil fuels needed to make virgin plastics. But here's the catch: procuring recycled plastics is still a mess. It's fragmented, manual, and hard to scale. Why? Because recycled polymers vary wildly in quality depending on the source, batch, and processing history. "The most pressing challenge is that data is scattered or missing, and quality is often confirmed only at the production line," the company explains. "Industrial buyers want recycled materials to behave like any other input: consistent quality, reliable delivery, no surprises – but today that is still the exception." ### The Trust Gap: Why Regulation Alone Won't Cut It Ambio's CEO, Tommi Bergström, believes the biggest barrier to recycled plastics adoption isn't regulation—it's trust. "People in the industry like to talk about regulation and the EU. We are a startup, we cannot yet impact what happens in Brussels. What we can impact is the purchasing experience for the buyer," he says. "When you're buying virgin plastics, you know exactly what you're getting. When you're buying recycled, you'll know if it works when it's running in your production line. Our goal is to predict if the material works or not before sampling even happens." That's where Ambio's AI-native platform comes in. It makes recycled plastics predictable by offering: - Verified materials with structured quality data - One accountable partner from first sample to long-term deliveries - A matching engine that learns from every transaction, improving over time By turning recycled plastics from a gamble into a reliably obtainable material, Ambio aims to become the trust layer for the entire recyclates market. ### What's Next for Ambio? The fresh capital will fuel international expansion and help Ambio cover more polymer types. The ultimate goal? Make recycled plastics procurement as predictable as buying virgin polymers, driving adoption across Europe and beyond. If Ambio succeeds, it could be a game-changer for European manufacturers—and a big step toward a more circular economy.
