German startup amber just raised $7.6M to build autonomous business AI infrastructure. Discover how it tackles fragmented enterprise data and knowledge loss.
When you think about AI in business, you probably picture a chatbot waiting for you to ask the right question. That's the problem amber, an Aachen-based startup, is trying to solve. They just closed a $7.6 million Series A round to build what they call the infrastructure for autonomous business AI.
The round was co-led by Ventech, which doubled down on its initial investment, and NRW.Venture, the venture capital fund of NRW.BANK. That's a solid vote of confidence from investors who know the European tech scene well.
### The Big Problem With Enterprise AI
Here's the thing. Companies are pouring money into AI, but most of them hit a wall. Their data is scattered across emails, documents, cloud apps, and internal systems. It's a mess. And AI tools can't make sense of that chaos.
So what happens? You get answers that are incomplete, unreliable, or just plain wrong. The AI doesn't understand your business context because it can't see the full picture.
There's another issue too. As experienced employees retire, they take years of business-critical knowledge with them. That's a growing problem for many organizations, and it's not going away.
### What amber Does Differently
Founded in 2021 by Bastian Maiworm, Philipp Reißel, and Igli Manaj, amber takes a different approach. Instead of waiting for you to ask the right question, it tries to understand what's happening inside your company and figure out what needs to be done.
The platform combines traditional search, generative AI, assistant features, and automation into one solution. It's all about making internal knowledge accessible while staying GDPR-compliant, which matters a lot for European businesses.
"Today's AI tools are still waiting for users to ask the right questions," said Maiworm, co-founder and CRO. "Our vision is fundamentally different. We have been building an AI platform that understands what's happening inside a company, recognizes what needs to be done and proactively supports employees by executing tasks autonomously."
### The AI Data Layer Advantage
Here's where it gets interesting. amber's proprietary AI Data Layer creates a unified understanding of business information across enterprise systems before applying large language models. That's a mouthful, but here's what it means in plain English.
The system structures your data first, so the AI doesn't have to wade through unstructured noise. This does two things. First, it gives you more reliable answers and better insights. Second, it improves token efficiency, which means you're not burning through your AI budget on irrelevant data.
"AI's next evolution is not another chatbot," said Reißel, co-founder and CEO. "The future belongs to systems that understand business context, recognize user intent and autonomously complete work."
### Who's Already Using It
amber isn't just a concept. It's already working with companies across manufacturing, engineering, IT consulting, and consumer goods. The customer list includes heavy hitters like Scheidt & Bachmann, Ritter Sport, Zentis, Schüßler-Plan, Dalli, and Hailo.
That's a pretty impressive roster for a startup that's only been around since 2021. It suggests they're solving a real problem that businesses actually feel.
### What's Next for amber
With this fresh funding, the team plans to accelerate their vision and bring it to more businesses across Europe. The investors seem confident in the trajectory.
"As amber's first institutional investor, we are backing the team again 18 months following our initial check," the company noted in their press materials. "They have identified early three of the defining problems of this AI cycle: turning AI into a competitive advantage, lifting the token yield customers actually get from generalist models while preserving data ownership, and finally enabling organizations to discover and govern their knowledge effectively."
The takeaway here is simple. The next wave of AI isn't about chatbots that answer questions. It's about systems that understand your business, anticipate needs, and get work done on their own. amber is betting that's the future, and now they have the funding to chase it.
