Berlin-based Prior Labs just sold to SAP for $1.1 billion—18 months after launch. The startup's tabular foundation models are already used by Hitachi and TD Bank. Here's what it means for European AI.
### A Record-Breaking Exit in European AI
Berlin-based frontier AI lab Prior Labs just made headlines. The company announced that multinational software giant SAP has completed its acquisition. SAP backed the deal with over $1.1 billion in investment (converted from €1 billion) to fund infrastructure, hiring, and long-term frontier research. That's a massive vote of confidence for a startup that's barely a year and a half old.
But here's the kicker: Prior Labs will keep running under its own brand. They'll maintain their leadership, research agenda, and customer relationships. They'll even continue publishing their research and making models openly available. All of this comes after their $9.8 million pre-Seed round in 2025 (converted from €9 million).
### From Research Project to AI Powerhouse
"Eighteen months ago, Prior Labs was a research project," says Frank Hutter, co-founder and CEO. "Today we're beginning our next chapter as an AI lab with the resources to tackle problems we simply couldn't before."
Hutter explains that taking tabular foundation models to the next level requires better data environments, deployment surfaces, and long-term research investment. And SAP, he says, is uniquely positioned to provide all of those things.
### What Are Tabular Foundation Models, Anyway?
Prior Labs pioneered something called tabular foundation models, or TFMs. It's a category of AI built specifically for enterprise data. Instead of forcing companies to train a separate AI model for every dataset, their technology—called TabPFN—uses a single pre-trained model. It can solve prediction tasks like payment delays, customer churn, supplier risk, and demand forecasting directly from structured data.
Here's where it gets interesting. Their tech is already being used in real-world applications:
- Preventing train failures with Hitachi
- Improving financial forecasting with TD Bank
- Applied in hundreds of research projects, from pancreatic cancer diagnosis to wildfire prediction to next-generation battery materials
### Why SAP Went All In
"Early on, SAP recognized that the greatest untapped opportunity in enterprise AI wasn't large language models; it was AI built for the structured data that runs the world's businesses," says Philipp Herzig, CTO of SAP. "Prior Labs has defined the category of TFMs and built the world's strongest research team in this category."
Herzig adds that combining Prior Labs' frontier model work with SAP's enterprise data and customer reach is how they intend to lead this category globally.
### The Bigger Picture for European AI
This acquisition isn't happening in a vacuum. EU-Startups' 2026 coverage shows about $2.1 billion (converted from €1.93 billion) across comparable companies. That includes Nscale's $1.85 billion AI-compute round and Verda's $109 million financing. Other investments are flowing into enterprise data, memory, and ERP infrastructure at companies like Conduct, OpsMill, and Modern Relay.
Germany alone has produced several direct comparisons: Berlin-based SPREAD, Cognee, and Qorelo, plus Stuttgart's Blockbrain and Munich's Interloom. Including SAP's commitment to Prior Labs, the total activity referenced now exceeds $3.2 billion (converted from €2.93 billion).
### What This Means for Enterprise AI
This acquisition enables Prior Labs to pursue multi-year frontier research programs that would have been out of reach for an 18-month-old company. Access to enterprise data environments and long-term investment will allow them to tackle more ambitious research across enterprise AI, scientific discovery, causality, relational data, and agentic systems.
And they're not stopping there. The company is aiming for even more ambitious "moonshots"—like solving some of the most important problems of our time in medical data and material sciences.
### The Bottom Line
Founded in 2024 by Frank Hutter, Noah Hollmann, and Sauraj Gambhir, Prior Labs has shown that European AI startups can compete on the global stage. And with SAP's backing, they're positioned to define the future of enterprise AI.
For anyone watching the European startup scene, this is a signal. The infrastructure to train, deploy, and govern enterprise AI is being built right now. And the companies that get it right? They're the ones to watch.
