ENGO, a startup based in Grenoble, France, just secured $5.5 million (€5.1 million) to push its lightweight augmented reality glasses further into the sports world. These aren't your clunky, sci-fi headsets. We're talking about smart eyewear that weighs less than 1.4 ounces and packs a battery life of up to 20 hours. That's a full day of training without needing to recharge. The funding round was led by Ventech, Odyssée Venture, and Bpifrance Amorçage Industriel, with continued support from Blueprint Partners. The goal? Speed up research and development on miniaturization and innovation, while also strengthening ENGO's grip on the global sports smart eyewear market. ### The Vision: Technology That Disappears Eric Marcellin-Dibon, CEO of ENGO, puts it simply: "Since ENGO's inception, we have pursued a simple vision: enabling athletes to stay focused on their performance, not the technology. The lighter, more natural, and more intuitive our eyewear becomes, the closer we get to our goal: making the technology disappear in favor of the athletic experience." That's the core idea here. Most athletes don't want to fiddle with gadgets mid-race. They want data—pace, heart rate, distance—but they want it without breaking their stride. ENGO's glasses project that info directly into their field of view using a Micro-OLED display. No looking down at a watch. No squinting at a phone. Just the numbers, right there. ### A Parent Company With Serious Cred ENGO was founded by Éric Marcellin-Dibon and Fabrice Berger Duquene. Its parent company, MICROOLED, is no small player. They're a leading manufacturer of near-eye micro-displays used in scopes, night vision, viewfinders, and other mission-critical applications. In 2023, MICROOLED raised $22.5 million (€21 million) led by Jolt Capital. That round was extended in November 2024 with Applied Ventures, the venture arm of Applied Materials, and then again in October 2025 with an additional $9.2 million (€8.5 million). So, there's deep tech expertise backing ENGO. This isn't a garage project. These are people who know how to build displays for high-stakes environments. ### How ENGO Glasses Stand Out Here's where things get interesting. According to ENGO, major U.S. players in the smart eyewear space are mostly making frames without built-in displays. Think audio-only or basic notifications. ENGO takes a different approach. They integrate an augmented reality Micro-OLED display that projects real-time performance data right into the athlete's line of sight. No need to glance away. The glasses are designed and assembled in France. The frame weighs less than 1.4 ounces (40 grams). And the battery lasts up to 20 hours. That's a huge deal for endurance athletes—runners, triathletes, cyclists—who spend hours training and competing. Beyond the hardware, ENGO built ActiveLook, an app ecosystem and open API. The idea is that ActiveLook modules can be embedded into normal glasses and controlled by any Bluetooth Low Energy device. So, athletes can customize what data they see and how they see it. ### What the Funding Will Actually Do This $5.5 million isn't just for R&D. ENGO has a clear plan: - Hire 20 new people in France for roles in marketing, business development, optical and mechanical engineering, and software and data engineering. - Accelerate innovation across their product range. - Expand partnerships with key players in the sports ecosystem. - Strengthen their presence in international markets. And they're already global. ENGO says 90% of its revenue comes from outside France, with half of that coming from the United States.
