Rome-based Exein raises $270M at a $1.7B valuation to secure Physical AI. The company blocks 5,000 weekly attacks and now expands across the US and APAC.

Rome-based Exein just became Europe's most valuable cybersecurity startup โ€” and it did so while blocking around 5,000 attacks every single week. The company announced $270 million (โ‚ฌ234 million) in fresh funding at a $1.7 billion (โ‚ฌ1.4 billion) valuation. That's not just a big number. It's a signal that Physical AI security is no longer a niche concern. ### What Exactly Is Physical AI Security? You've heard of securing cloud data. Physical AI security protects machines that use AI to perceive, decide, and act in the real world โ€” robots, drones, autonomous vehicles, even industrial sensors. These aren't abstract software problems. A hacked robot arm on a factory floor can hurt people. A compromised drone can crash into something. Exein's software runs directly on those machines, distributed across more than two billion connected devices. Gianni Cuozzo, founder and CEO, puts it plainly: "AI is moving out of the cloud and into the physical world, and this is the transition Exein was built for." He adds that attacks now happen at machine speed, so defense has to as well. That's why Exein built what it calls "machine-time security for machine-time attacks." ### The Money Behind the Mission The round was led by Headline, with participation from Sofina, Goldman Sachs, the European Investment Bank Group through ETCI, KfW Capital, and T.Capital. Previous investors like Balderton, HV, Intrepid Growth Partners, 33N Ventures, Lakestar, Supernova Invest, Blue Cloud Ventures, and Geodesic Capital also joined. On top of that, J.P. Morgan led an upsizing of Exein's existing revolving credit facility, with KfW coming in as an additional lender. Clarey Zhu, Partner at Headline, explained why they doubled down: "As AI moves into robots, vehicles, and critical infrastructure, securing the physical world will become one of the defining cybersecurity challenges of the next decade." She praised the team's technical depth and long-term focus. ### From Series B to Unicorn in Two Years Exein's journey has been fast. The company raised a $16 million (โ‚ฌ15 million) Series B in 2024, then $184 million (โ‚ฌ170 million) across two announcements in 2025. Now this. Their valuation has increased thirty-fold in just two years, and H1 2026 annual recurring revenue was up 4x year-over-year. About 50% of that revenue comes from Asia-Pacific, with operations spanning Europe, APAC, and the United States. This new funding will accelerate US and APAC expansion. Earlier this year, Exein also launched Photon, a preemptive runtime security architecture that operates at the kernel level to block malicious execution before it starts. ### Why This Matters for the Broader Market Exein's round dwarfs other 2026 cybersecurity raises. For comparison: - Cloudsmith (Belfast) raised $71 million (โ‚ฌ61.5 million) for AI-driven software supply chain security - Qevlar AI (Paris) raised $30 million (โ‚ฌ25.8 million) for agentic security operations - NeuralTrust (Barcelona) raised $20 million (โ‚ฌ17.2 million) to secure enterprise AI agents - Escape raised $18 million (โ‚ฌ15.4 million) for AI-powered offensive security - Test of Things (Finland) raised $1.4 million (โ‚ฌ1.2 million) for IoT cybersecurity testing Before Exein's announcement, all 2026 cybersecurity rounds tracked by EU-Startups totaled about $187 million (โ‚ฌ161.4 million). Add Exein, and that jumps to roughly $458 million (โ‚ฌ395.4 million). One deal nearly tripled the total. ### The Takeaway Physical AI is where cloud AI was a decade ago โ€” full of promise, but also full of risk. Exein is betting that the companies who secure these intelligent machines will define the next era of cybersecurity. With $270 million in the bank and a $1.7 billion valuation, they're now positioned to prove it.
