Safehire.ai, founded by ex-British Army officers, has raised $2.08M total to scale its AI-powered digital risk screening platform that spots hidden hiring risks traditional checks miss.
Safehire.ai, a London-based digital risk intelligence company, just landed a serious vote of confidence from investors. The company, which helps organizations make safer hiring and access decisions, has secured a $673,000 (€583.2k) follow-on investment from a private investor. That's on top of the $1.41 million (€1.22 million) Seed round they closed back in April 2025, bringing their total funding to a solid $2.08 million (€1.8 million).
### What Does Safehire.ai Actually Do?
At its core, Safehire.ai is tackling a problem that's been quietly growing for years. Traditional background checks—think DBS, BPSS, credit checks, and employment references—simply don't catch everything. In today's world, where our digital footprints are massive and messy, there's a huge gap between what those checks reveal and what's actually out there.
Simon Holden, co-founder and CEO, put it plainly: "Safehire challenges the idea that traditional checks are enough. By looking beyond the surface, we help organisations identify hidden risk, strengthen safeguarding and make high-trust decisions with greater confidence."
Holden, a former school bursar and cybersecurity founder, saw this problem firsthand in education. He teamed up with Sean Lumley, a serial tech entrepreneur who co-founded CybSafe, to launch Safehire.ai in 2024. Both are former British Army officers, and that military background isn't just for show—it shapes their entire approach.
### The Military-Grade Methodology
The platform borrows heavily from military intelligence analytical processes. It scans surface, deep, and dark web sources for digital risk signals, then applies AI-enriched context to the raw data. But here's the kicker: nothing goes out without a human check. Ex-military intelligence-trained analysts review every finding before it's packaged into an easy-to-understand background risk report.
That human verification layer is what sets them apart. It's not just a black box spitting out scores; it's evidence-based digital intelligence that people can actually trust.
### Why This Matters for HR Teams
Here's a staggering stat: a single human analyst can only handle about 15 searches per day. Safehire.ai's Digital Risk Screening (DRS) platform can conduct over 10,000. That's not just a marginal improvement—it's a complete game-changer for efficiency.
One large multi-academy trust reported that using Safehire.ai saved its HR team an average of one hour per candidate. When you're hiring at scale, that adds up fast.
And the cost difference? Traditional vetting by professional staff can run about $1,900 per search. Safehire.ai offers a fraction of that cost, making thorough risk screening accessible to organizations that previously couldn't afford it.
### Where It's Headed Next
This new funding isn't just about maintaining the status quo. The company has clear plans to:
- Scale Digital Risk Screening beyond education into larger enterprise use cases
- Develop their insider risk capability—a growing concern for many organizations
- Prepare for expansion into other jurisdictions
They're already working with organizations across education, care, sport, charities, regulated workforces, public-sector supply chains, financial services, and critical infrastructure. But the ambition is clearly bigger.
The timing feels right. As the digital risk surface around people becomes more complex and fragmented, the old ways of vetting just don't cut it anymore. Safehire.ai is betting that blending AI with human intelligence is the way forward—and investors seem to agree.
