London's Safehire.ai, founded by ex-British Army officers, raised $612K to scale AI-powered digital risk screening. The platform scans surface, deep, and dark web data to spot hidden hiring risks.

When you're hiring for a school, a hospital, or a financial firm, a standard background check can feel like a safety net. But what if the real risks are hiding in places you're not even looking? That's the question Safehire.ai set out to answer, and it just got a serious vote of confidence from investors. The London-based startup, founded by former British Army officers, has secured a $612,000 follow-on investment from a private investor. Combined with its $1.28 million seed round from April 2025, the company has now raised a total of $1.89 million to expand its AI-powered digital risk screening platform. ### The Problem with Traditional Checks Think about the last time you ran a background check on a candidate. You probably looked at criminal records, credit history, and employment references. But here's the uncomfortable truth: those checks only scratch the surface. Safehire's co-founder and CEO, Simon Holden, puts it bluntly: "Safehire challenges the idea that traditional checks are enough. By looking beyond the surface, we help organisations identify hidden risk, strengthen safeguarding and make high-trust decisions with greater confidence." Holden knows this space well. He's a former school bursar and cybersecurity founder who saw the digital risk visibility gap facing education first-hand. His co-founder, Sean Lumley, is a serial tech entrepreneur and the co-founder of CybSafe, a human risk management platform. ### How Digital Risk Screening Actually Works The platform's methodology draws on military intelligence analytical processes. It's a three-step approach: - **Search**: It scans open-source data across the surface web, deep web, and dark web - **Context**: AI-enriched tools add context to the raw data, trained around military intelligence methods - **Verification**: Human analysts, many with ex-military intelligence training, review everything before it's packaged into a report This hybrid approach matters. AI alone can flag too many false positives. Humans alone can't scale. Together, they create something that's both fast and reliable. The results are dramatic. The platform can conduct over 10,000 searches per day, compared to the 15 searches a single human analyst can handle. And the cost difference is staggering. Traditional professional vetting can run about $1,900 per search, while Safehire's approach costs a fraction of that. ### Why This Matters for Hiring Teams One large multi-academy trust reported that using Safehire's checks saved its HR team an average of one hour per candidate. When you're hiring dozens or hundreds of people, that adds up fast. The company is already working with organizations across education, care, sport, charities, regulated workforces, public-sector supply chains, financial services, and critical infrastructure. But this new funding will let it push beyond its current focus. ### What's Next for Safehire Holden says the investment allows the company to scale Digital Risk Screening beyond education, support larger enterprise use cases, develop its insider risk capability, and prepare for expansion into other jurisdictions. That last point is key. Insider risk—the threat posed by people within an organization—is a growing concern for enterprises everywhere. And as remote work blurs the lines between personal and professional digital footprints, the need for this kind of screening is only going to grow. In a world where online activity can reveal a lot about someone's judgment and character, Safehire is betting that the future of hiring isn't just about what's on a resume. It's about what's hiding in the digital shadows.
