ispace-EUROPE, a Luxembourg-based company that builds lunar rovers, just won Phase 2 of the MAGPIE contract from the European Space Agency (ESA). MAGPIE stands for Mission for Advanced Geophysics and Polar Ice Exploration. It's Europe's first rover designed to explore the Moon's south pole for water ice.
The contract is worth about $71 million (converted from EUR 65 million). That money covers everything from building the rover to testing it, shipping it to the Moon, and operating it once it gets there.

ispace-EUROPE is the European arm of ispace, inc., a global lunar exploration company with offices in Japan, Luxembourg, the United States, and Saudi Arabia. They have more than 300 employees worldwide.
This isn't their first rodeo. ispace-EUROPE was responsible for the first European-designed, manufactured, and assembled lunar rover to launch into space. That was the TENACIOUS rover, which flew on ispace's Mission 2.
### What Happens Next?
Phase 2 of the contract started on July 1, 2026. The team is already working toward the next big milestone: the Structural Thermal Model Manufacturing Readiness Review.
Under the contract, ispace-EUROPE will serve as the mission prime. That means they're in charge of:
- Mission design
- Science objectives
- Rover development
- Payload integration
- Mission operations
Sophia Casanova, Senior Lunar Exploration Scientist at ispace-EUROPE, will serve as Principal Investigator for MAGPIE.

Sara Pastor, ESA's Lunar Programme Manager, highlighted that MAGPIE "exemplifies ESA's commitment to delivering ambitious exploration objectives through innovative, rapid-development missions."
She also pointed out the growing cooperation between ESA and JAXA (Japan's space agency). The two agencies are combining their strengths to tackle common exploration challenges.
MAGPIE is scheduled to fly aboard ispace's Mission 4 lunar lander in 2029. That might seem far off, but in the world of space exploration, it's practically tomorrow.
