That's where something called femtosecond lasers come in, and a company called LITILIT, based in Vilnius, is making some big moves to change the game. This isn't just pocket change; it's a significant investment to develop their new femtosecond laser modular system, which they're calling FEMODA. The goal? To make these advanced lasers more accessible and open up a whole world of new applications. ### What's the Big Idea Behind FEMODA? So, what exactly is FEMODA going to do? Well, right now, femtosecond lasers are super useful, but they're often limited to manufacturing small, high-value parts. Think tiny components for consumer electronics or intricate medical devices. Nikolajus Gavrilinas, the CEO of LITILIT, says their new system is going to blow those limitations wide open. He envisions these lasers being used in much larger industries. Imagine the mass production of metal tools or creating specialized coatings on huge surfaces, like the bodies of aircraft or cars. It's about bringing that incredible precision to a much bigger scale. Plus, it’ll speed up existing applications, making things like displays and computer chips even more efficient to produce. ### The Problem with Current Laser Systems Now, you might be wondering, if these lasers are so great, why aren't they everywhere already? Good question! Gavrilinas points out that the adoption of femtosecond laser systems has been held back by a few major hurdles. For starters, they often require heavy infrastructure, complicated installation, and a lot of maintenance. It’s not just a plug-and-play situation. Most existing systems use water cooling, which means you need dedicated circulation and cleaning setups, plus regular upkeep. And that’s not all. These systems typically rely on large, heavy optical modules that need to sit on massive optical bases. They also use super sensitive optics to deliver the laser beam precisely where it needs to go. Oh, and they demand a very specific, temperature-controlled operating environment. It’s a lot to manage, to say the least. ### LITILIT's Innovative Solution This is where LITILIT's innovation truly shines. They’re building a system that tackles these challenges head-on. "All this adds complexity and limits where lasers can be used," Gavrilinas explained. "We're building a system that combines the control electronics, optics, and cooling into a single industrial unit that can easily integrate into any factory." Their new modular platform is designed to be much less sensitive to temperature, humidity, and even vibration. That’s a huge deal for industrial settings. And here’s a really smart part: its modules can be combined to create a more powerful system. If one module happens to fail, you just replace that single module, not the entire system. Talk about making things easier and more cost-effective! ### Looking Ahead: A Future of Scalable Lasers FEMODA is set to achieve an average optical power of up to 1000 watts, split across 10 to 20 separate beam channels. Each channel will be capable of delivering femtosecond pulses to a different processing point on a production line. Gavrilinas believes this will make it one of the most powerful modular industrial systems out there. To really push this scalability forward, LITILIT started developing a brand-new, high-capacity laser factory in Vilnius back in June. This facility is expected to start operations this fall, with an ambitious goal of producing 3,000 femtosecond lasers per year. The total project value is about $10.8 million, with the $8.6 million loan from ILTE and a $2.2 million investment from LITILIT itself. Commercialization of this exciting new laser system is slated for the second half of 2029. It’s definitely a space to watch, as this could truly change how many industries operate.
