### A Small Startup, a Giant Leap
Imagine a five-year-old company winning a contract worth hundreds of millions. That's exactly what happened to The Exploration Company (TEC), a European space startup. They just secured a service contract from the European Space Agency (ESA) worth about $800 million (€760 million) to build and fly Europe's first commercial cargo capsule to the International Space Station (ISS).
This isn't just any deal. It's a sign that Europe is serious about competing in the commercial space race. And it comes right after TEC raised $450 million (€387 million) in Series C funding. So, what's the big deal? Let's break it down.
### The Deal: What's Included?
The contract, signed at the International Space Summit in Paris, is split into two parts:
- $310 million (€310 million) for an initial demonstration mission.
- Up to $450 million (€450 million) for two optional service missions, to be confirmed later.
Josef Aschbacher, ESA Director General, said, "Today's agreement with The Exploration Company shows how ESA can act as an anchor customer—strengthening Europe's commercial space sector and turning ambition into reality."
This contract falls under Phase 2 of ALADDIN (Autonomous LEO Accelerated Demo Docking to ISS Node), which is the successor to ESA's Low Earth Orbit Cargo Return Service (LCRS) program. Back in 2022, ESA member states endorsed the LCRS concept, and two projects received €25 million each to develop their concepts. After confirmation at ESA's Council at Ministerial level in November 2025, the program moved to Phase 2, tendered in March 2026. TEC won that competitive tender, and ESA describes it as its first and largest capsule transportation service contract awarded to a European company in open competition.
### The Company Behind the Capsule
Founded in 2021 by Hélène Huby and a team of aerospace veterans, TEC is building the full stack of space transportation, including reusable capsules and high-thrust engines. Their flagship product is Nyx, a reusable capsule designed to launch on any heavy-lift rocket, dock autonomously with a space station, and return up to 6,600 pounds (3,000 kilograms) of cargo to Earth.
Nyx is built for up to 10 missions per capsule and uses in-house carbon-based thermal protection for re-entry, along with proprietary flight software, guidance, and navigation systems for autonomous docking. The company develops Nyx across sites in Munich, Bordeaux, and Turin, and is expanding its footprint in the United States and the UAE.
Beyond the ESA deal, TEC has also signed pre-booking agreements with commercial space station operators Axiom, Starlab, and Vast, taking its total booked missions to 10, worth roughly $2 billion in contracts. Nyx is currently going through the ISS certification process with NASA.
### Why This Matters
This contract is more than just a win for TEC. It's a shift in how Europe builds space technology. Hélène Huby, founder and CEO of TEC, put it this way: "This is more than a contract award: it reflects a shift in how we build space technology in Europe. We started the development of Nyx with private funding only, and we are now at a technical maturity level where ESA and Member States' public funding can support us massively, as anchor clients, to help us finalise the vehicle. It is also the first time in Europe that a five-year-old space startup wins a contract worth hundreds of millions of euros in open competition."
