The Exploration Company lands a $820M ESA contract to build Europe's first commercial cargo capsule, just days after raising $450M in Series C funding.
Europe just made a move that could change how the continent does business in space. The European Space Agency (ESA) has awarded The Exploration Company (TEC) a service contract worth €760 million (about $820 million) to build and fly Europe's first commercial cargo capsule to the International Space Station (ISS).
That's a big number, and it's worth unpacking.
### The Deal, Broken Down
The contract, signed at the International Space Summit in Paris, splits into two parts:
- €310 million (about $335 million) for an initial demonstration mission.
- Up to €450 million (roughly $485 million) for two optional service missions, to be confirmed later.
ESA Director General Josef Aschbacher put it simply: "Today's agreement with The Exploration Company shows how ESA can act as an anchor customer—strengthening Europe's commercial space sector and turning ambition into reality."
In other words, ESA isn't just funding a rocket. It's buying a service, the same way NASA does with SpaceX. That shift matters.
### Why the Timing Matters
The contract comes just days after TEC closed a €387 million ($450 million) Series C round. That money is earmarked for final development of Nyx, the company's reusable capsule, and for accelerating work on Storm, a reusable high-thrust rocket engine.
So in a single week, TEC raised private capital and locked in a major public contract. That's not common in Europe, where deep-tech startups often struggle to bridge the gap between early funding and commercial scale.
### What Is ALADDIN?
The contract falls under Phase 2 of what ESA now calls ALADDIN—short for Autonomous LEO Accelerated Demo Docking to ISS Node. It's the successor to the agency's Low Earth Orbit Cargo Return Service (LCRS) program.
Back in 2022, ESA member states endorsed the LCRS concept, a competition asking European companies to propose a first step toward cargo services to and from low Earth orbit. Two projects were selected, each receiving €25 million (about $27 million) to develop their concepts further.
After confirmation at ESA's Council at Ministerial level in November 2025, the program moved into Phase 2, tendered in March 2026. TEC won that competitive tender. ESA describes it as its first and largest capsule transportation service contract awarded to a European company in open competition.
### Meet Nyx: The Capsule Doing the Heavy Lifting
At the heart of TEC's plan is Nyx, a reusable capsule designed to:
- Launch on any heavy-lift rocket.
- Dock autonomously with a space station.
- Return up to 6,600 pounds (3,000 kilograms) of cargo to Earth.
Each capsule is built for up to 10 missions. It relies on in-house carbon-based thermal protection for re-entry, plus proprietary flight software, guidance, and navigation systems for autonomous docking.
TEC develops Nyx across sites in Munich, Bordeaux, and Turin, and is expanding its footprint in the United States and the UAE.
### Beyond ESA: A Growing Backlog
TEC hasn't put all its eggs in one basket. The company has also signed pre-booking agreements with commercial space station operators Axiom, Starlab, and Vast. That brings its total booked missions to 10, worth roughly $2 billion in contracts.
Meanwhile, Nyx is going through the ISS certification process with NASA.
### A Shift in How Europe Builds Space Tech
Hélène Huby, founder and CEO of The Exploration Company, framed the win as more than a contract:
> "This is more than a contract award: it reflects a shift in how we build space technology in Europe. We started the development of Nyx with private funding only, and we are now at a technical maturity level where ESA and Member States' public funding can support us massively, as anchor clients, to help us finalise the vehicle. It is also the first time in Europe that a five-year-old space startup wins a contract worth hundreds of millions of euros in open competition."
That last point is key. A five-year-old startup beating established players in an open tender is a signal that Europe's space sector is becoming more competitive—and more commercial.
### What Happens Next
Under the agreement, TEC and ESA will now work together to finalize the capsule and prepare for its first demonstration mission. If all goes well, Europe will have its own commercial cargo service to the ISS—and a new player in the global space logistics market.
