Europe's $826M Space Bet: The Startup That Just Won ESA's Biggest Contract

The Exploration Company just won a $826 million ESA contract to build Europe's first commercial cargo capsule for the ISS. Here's what it means for the space industry.

Imagine a five-year-old startup beating aerospace giants to win a contract worth hundreds of millions. That's exactly what happened when The Exploration Company (TEC) landed a service contract from the European Space Agency (ESA) worth €760 million (about $826 million). The deal? To build and fly Europe's first commercial cargo capsule to the International Space Station (ISS). Signed at the International Space Summit in Paris, the contract breaks down into €310 million (roughly $337 million) for an initial demonstration mission and up to €450 million (around $489 million) for two optional follow-up missions. It's a big vote of confidence in Europe's commercial space sector. ### Why This Contract Matters "Today's agreement with The Exploration Company shows how ESA can act as an anchor customer—strengthening Europe's commercial space sector and turning ambition into reality," said Josef Aschbacher, ESA Director General. In plain English: ESA is putting its money where its mouth is, betting on a startup to deliver a critical capability. Just days before, TEC closed a €387 million ($450 million) Series C round. That funding will finalize development of its Nyx reusable capsule and speed up work on Storm, a reusable high-thrust rocket engine. So the company isn't just winning contracts—it's also attracting serious private investment. ### The Road to ALADDIN The contract falls under Phase 2 of what ESA now calls ALADDIN (Autonomous LEO Accelerated Demo Docking to ISS Node). It's the successor to the Low Earth Orbit Cargo Return Service (LCRS) program. Back in 2022, ESA member states endorsed the concept, and two projects each received €25 million (about $27 million) to develop their ideas. After confirmation at ESA's Council at Ministerial level in November 2025, the program moved into Phase 2, tendered in March 2026. TEC won that competitive tender, marking ESA's first and largest capsule transportation service contract awarded to a European company in open competition. "With ALADDIN, we are accelerating the development of a European capability to transport cargo to and from low Earth orbit," added Aschbacher. "At the same time, we are enabling European companies to innovate faster, attract private investment and compete globally." ### Meet Nyx: The Reusable Capsule Founded in 2021 by Hélène Huby and a team of aerospace veterans, TEC is building the full stack of space transportation. At the heart of its mission is Nyx, a reusable capsule designed to launch on any heavy-lift rocket, dock autonomously with a space station, and return up to 6,614 pounds (3,000 kilograms) of cargo to Earth. Each capsule is built for up to 10 missions, using in-house carbon-based thermal protection for re-entry and proprietary flight software for autonomous docking. The company develops Nyx across sites in Munich, Bordeaux, and Turin, and is expanding into the United States and the UAE. Beyond the ESA deal, TEC has signed pre-booking agreements with commercial space station operators Axiom, Starlab, and Vast. That brings its total booked missions to 10, worth roughly $2 billion in contracts. Nyx is currently going through ISS certification with NASA. ### A Shift in European Space "This is more than a contract award: it reflects a shift in how we build space technology in Europe," said Huby, founder and CEO. "We started the development of Nyx with private funding only, and we are now at a technical maturity level where ESA and Member States' public funding can support us massively, as anchor clients, to help us finalise the vehicle. It is also the first time in Europe that a five-year-old space startup wins a contract worth hundreds of millions of euros in open competition." So what's next? TEC and ESA will jointly work on the demonstration mission, aiming to prove that a European startup can deliver cargo to and from the ISS. If successful, it could open the floodgates for more private space ventures in Europe. And that's a big deal—not just for TEC, but for the entire continent's ambitions in space.
