ESA's $760M Bet on a 5-Year-Old Startup Could Change Space

The Exploration Company just won a $830M ESA contract to build Europe's first commercial cargo capsule for the ISS. Here's what that means for the space industry.

The Exploration Company (TEC), a European space startup, just landed a service contract from the European Space Agency (ESA) worth about $830 million (€760 million). The deal? Build and fly Europe's first commercial cargo capsule to the International Space Station (ISS). That's a big deal for a company founded only in 2021. ### What Exactly Is the Deal? The contract, signed at the International Space Summit in Paris, breaks down into $340 million (€310 million) for an initial demonstration mission and up to $490 million (€450 million) for two optional follow-up missions. Those extras will be confirmed later, but they signal serious long-term interest. "Today's agreement with The Exploration Company shows how ESA can act as an anchor customer—strengthening Europe's commercial space sector and turning ambition into reality," said Josef Aschbacher, ESA Director General. This comes just days after TEC closed a $450 million (€387 million) Series C round. That money is earmarked for finishing development of its Nyx reusable capsule and speeding up work on Storm, a reusable high-thrust rocket engine. ### The Program Behind the Contract The contract falls under Phase 2 of ALADDIN (Autonomous LEO Accelerated Demo Docking to ISS Node), which succeeds ESA's Low Earth Orbit Cargo Return Service (LCRS) program. Back in 2022, ESA member states endorsed the LCRS concept—a competition asking European companies to propose a first step toward cargo services to and from low Earth orbit. ESA initially picked two projects and gave each about $27 million (€25 million) to develop their concepts. After confirmation at ESA's Council at Ministerial level in November 2025, the program moved to Phase 2, tendered in March 2026. That phase shifts from early development to full system completion and an in-orbit demonstration. TEC won that competitive tender. ESA calls it the first and largest capsule transportation service contract awarded to a European company in open competition. "With ALADDIN, we are accelerating the development of a European capability to transport cargo to and from low Earth orbit," Aschbacher added. "At the same time, we are enabling European companies to innovate faster, attract private investment and compete globally." ### Meet Nyx: The Reusable Capsule At the heart of TEC's plans is Nyx, a reusable capsule designed to launch on any heavy-lift rocket, dock autonomously with a space station, and return up to 6,600 pounds (3,000 kilograms) of cargo to Earth. Each capsule is built for up to 10 missions. Nyx relies on in-house carbon-based thermal protection for re-entry, plus proprietary flight software, guidance, and navigation systems for autonomous docking. The company develops Nyx across sites in Munich, Bordeaux, and Turin, and is expanding into the United States and the UAE. ### Beyond ESA: Commercial Deals Piling Up TEC isn't just relying on ESA. It has signed pre-booking agreements with commercial space station operators Axiom, Starlab, and Vast. That brings its total booked missions to 10, worth roughly $2 billion in contracts. Nyx is also going through ISS certification with NASA. "This is more than a contract award: it reflects a shift in how we build space technology in Europe," said Hélène Huby, founder and CEO of The Exploration Company. "We started the development of Nyx with private funding only, and we are now at a technical maturity level where ESA and Member States' public funding can support us massively, as anchor clients, to help us finalise the vehicle. It is also the first time in Europe that a five-year-old space startup wins a contract worth hundreds of millions of euros in open competition." ### Why This Matters for the Space Industry This isn't just another contract. It's a signal that Europe is serious about competing in commercial space, and that private startups can win big public deals. For TEC, it's validation. For ESA, it's a bet on agility and innovation. And for the rest of us, it means more players in the race to low Earth orbit—which could lead to faster progress and lower costs. Keep an eye on Nyx.
