Gravity Gardens raises $2.8M to scale a dry, chemical-free seed activation tech that could finally make priming affordable for field crops, not just high-value veggies.
Gravity Gardens, a Nijmegen-based AgTech startup, just raised €2.6 million (about $2.8 million) in Seed funding. Their mission? To replace a 40-year-old industry standard with something radically simpler: a dry, chemical-free way to activate seeds.
### Why Seed Activation Has Always Been Wet—and Expensive
If you've ever tried to get a garden going, you know the frustration: some seeds sprout fast, others sit there like they're on vacation. That's where seed activation comes in. For decades, the go-to method has been priming—basically soaking seeds, holding them in controlled conditions, then drying them again.
It works. But it's a wet, messy, expensive process. As Paulino Valdés, founder and CEO of Gravity Gardens, puts it: "Priming has been the industry's answer for forty years and it is a good answer, but it is a wet one, and the cost and complications that come with that are why it only ever made sense for a handful of high-value crops."
That's the catch. Wet priming only pencils out for high-value vegetables and flowers. For the vast majority of crops—wheat, barley, corn, you name it—it's never been economically viable. So most seeds go into the ground without any activation at all.
### The Dry Difference: No Water, No Chemicals, No Coating
Gravity Gardens' technology flips the script. Their process uses no water, no chemicals, and leaves no coating on the seed. That means no hydration stage to control, nothing to dry off afterward. The economics change completely.
"What we have is dry, which takes those costs out," Valdés says. "Cheap enough for field crops, and aimed at the thing that actually decides the season."
That "thing" is vigour—how fast and strongly a crop establishes itself once it's in the ground. Germination matters, sure, but vigour is what separates a good season from a disappointing one. And vigour is the first thing you lose as seeds age or when spring weather turns nasty.
### The Money Behind the Mission
The €2.6 million round combines equity investment with EFRO regional development funding. Backers include VP Capital, Brightlands Venture Partners (BVP), and Graduate Ventures, plus a group of private investors. Earlier support came from StartLife and a Rabobank innovation loan, bringing total funding to over €3 million (about $3.2 million).
"The most impactful innovations are often the ones that improve the foundations of a system," says Erica van Eeghen, Senior Manager Ventures at VP Capital. "Seeds are exactly that foundation."
### From Space Tech to Your Farm
Founded in 2024 by Valdés and Robin Le Vigouroux, Gravity Gardens developed its tech with help from the European Space Agency Business Incubation Centre (ESA BIC) Noordwijk. The company has run seven external trials, including validation with Vertify, and operates its own R&D and production facility in Nijmegen.
They're also working with HLB, Oost NL, and Foodvalley, and even snagged an SME Innovation Voucher along the way.
### What This Means for Farmers
Here's the bottom line: if you're a farmer growing field crops, seed activation has never been an option. Too expensive, too complicated. Gravity Gardens wants to change that.
Their dry process could make stronger crop establishment accessible to more farmers while using fewer natural resources. That's not just good for business—it's good for the planet.
As Valdés puts it: "Every seed company in Europe has a seed lot sitting in storage that germinates at grade A quality on the bench and then disappoints in the field. Germination matters, but it is not the number that decides your season. Vigour is."
And if Gravity Gardens has its way, vigour will soon be available to everyone—not just the high-value crop crowd.
