Gravity Gardens raises $2.8M to scale a dry, chemical-free seed activation tech that could finally make seed treatment affordable for field crops.

Gravity Gardens, a Nijmegen-based AgTech startup, just raised €2.6 million ($2.8 million) in Seed funding. Their mission? To change how seeds get activated before they hit the ground. And they're doing it without a single drop of water. If you follow European startup news, you know that's a bold claim. The seed treatment industry has relied on wet priming for decades. It works, but it's expensive and messy. Gravity Gardens says they've cracked the code with a dry process that leaves no coating, uses no chemicals, and still boosts crop establishment. ### Why This Seed Round Matters This round mixes equity investment with EFRO regional development funding. It was backed by VP Capital, Brightlands Venture Partners, and Graduate Ventures, plus a group of private investors. That follows earlier support from StartLife and a Rabobank innovation loan. Total raised so far? More than €3 million ($3.2 million). Erica van Eeghen, Senior Manager Ventures at VP Capital, put it simply: "The most impactful innovations are often the ones that improve the foundations of a system. Seeds are exactly that foundation." She added that Gravity Gardens could make stronger crop establishment accessible to more farmers while using fewer natural resources. ### The Problem With Wet Priming Conventional seed priming is wet. You hydrate the seed, hold it under controlled conditions, then dry it again. That introduces handling constraints, capacity limits, and costs at every step. The economics only ever worked for high-value vegetable and flower seeds. For most crops by volume, seed activation was never even on the table. Gravity Gardens removes water from the equation. No hydration stage to control. Nothing to dry off afterwards. That changes everything. ### Dry Tech, Bigger Goals Founded in 2024 by Paulino Valdés (CEO) and Robin Le Vigouroux (CTO), Gravity Gardens developed its tech with support from the European Space Agency Business Incubation Centre (ESA BIC) Noordwijk. The company says its process doesn't just improve germination. It targets vigour: how fast and how strongly a crop establishes itself in the field. "Every seed company in Europe has a seed lot sitting in storage that germinates at grade A quality on the bench and then disappoints in the field," Valdés said. "Germination matters, but it is not the number that decides your season. Vigour is." That's a key distinction. Priming has been the industry's answer for forty years, but it's a wet answer. Gravity Gardens claims its dry process is cheap enough for field crops and aimed at what actually decides the season. ### What's Next? The startup reports seven external trials, including validation experiments by Vertify. It operates its own R&D and production facility in Nijmegen and runs programs with Vertify, HLB, Oost NL, and Foodvalley. Through those partnerships, it accessed an SME Innovation Voucher. For European arable and horticultural crops, this could be a game-changer. If the technology scales, farmers could get stronger crop establishment without extra water, chemicals, or cost.
