Gravity Gardens raises €2.6M ($2.8M) to scale its dry, chemical-free seed activation tech. No water, no chemicals—just stronger crops for less.
What if you could boost crop yields without a single drop of water or chemicals? That's exactly what Gravity Gardens, a Nijmegen-based AgTech startup, is betting on. They've just secured a €2.6 million Seed round (about $2.8 million) to scale their dry, chemical-free seed activation technology.
### Why This Funding Matters
This round combines equity investment with EFRO regional development funding. It was backed by VP Capital, Brightlands Venture Partners (BVP), and Graduate Ventures, along with private investors. Earlier support came from StartLife and a Rabobank innovation loan, bringing total funding to over €3 million ($3.3 million).

Gravity Gardens has developed a technology that could make stronger crop establishment accessible to many more farmers while using fewer natural resources. That is what makes this investment so compelling," said Erica van Eeghen, Senior Manager Ventures at VP Capital.
### The Problem with Traditional Seed Priming
Conventional seed priming is wet. You hydrate the seed, hold it under controlled conditions, then dry it again. That introduces handling constraints, capacity limits, and costs at every step. The economics only ever worked for high-value vegetable and flower seeds. For the vast majority of crops by volume, seed activation was never even on the table.
### How Gravity Gardens Is Different
Founded in 2024 by Paulino Valdés (CEO) and Robin Le Vigouroux (CTO), Gravity Gardens uses a dry process that requires no water, no chemicals, and leaves no coating on the seed. The tech was developed with support from the European Space Agency Business Incubation Centre (ESA BIC) Noordwijk.
By removing water, they eliminate the hydration stage and the drying step. That changes the economics entirely. Now, seed activation can be affordable for field crops like wheat, corn, and soybeans—not just high-value veggies.
### Focus on Vigour, Not Just Germination
Paulino Valdés explains: "Every seed company in Europe has a seed lot sitting in storage that germinates at grade A quality on the bench and then disappoints in the field. Germination matters, but it is not the number that decides your season. Vigour is, and vigour is the first thing you lose as a lot ages or as the spring turns against you."
Priming has been the industry's answer for 40 years. It works, but it's wet. And that's why it only made sense for a handful of crops. Gravity Gardens' dry process takes those costs out. It's cheap enough for field crops and aimed at what actually decides the season: vigour.
### Proven in Trials
The technology has undergone seven external trials, including validation by Vertify. Gravity Gardens operates its own R&D and production facility in Nijmegen and runs programs with Vertify, HLB, Oost NL, and Foodvalley. They also accessed an SME Innovation Voucher.

With this funding, Gravity Gardens plans to scale its technology and bring it to more farmers across Europe. If successful, it could revolutionize how we think about seed treatment—making it more sustainable, cost-effective, and accessible for all types of crops.
For farmers, this means stronger crop establishment with fewer resources. For the planet, it means less water and chemical use. And for the industry, it's a wake-up call that sometimes the biggest innovations come from removing things, not adding them.
