What if you could boost crop yields without a single drop of water or chemicals? That's exactly what a Dutch startup is betting on, and investors just handed them $2.8 million to prove it. ### The Seed Round That Could Change Agriculture Gravity Gardens, based in Nijmegen, Netherlands, has secured a €2.6 million ($2.8 million) Seed round to scale its dry, chemical-free seed activation technology. The round combines equity investment with EFRO regional development funding and was backed by VP Capital, Brightlands Venture Partners (BVP), and Graduate Ventures, along with private investors. This follows earlier support from StartLife and a Rabobank innovation loan, pushing total funding past €3 million ($3.2 million). So why does this matter? Because for decades, seed activation has been a wet process. You hydrate the seed, hold it under controlled conditions, then dry it again. That's expensive, complicated, and only makes sense for high-value crops like vegetables and flowers. For most field crops, it's never been an option. ### Why Dry Changes Everything Gravity Gardens removes water from the equation entirely. No hydration, no drying, no coating left on the seed. That simple shift slashes costs and opens the door to crops that were previously off the table. But it's not just about cost. The company is targeting something called "vigour" – how quickly and strongly a crop establishes itself in the field. As Paulino Valdés, founder and CEO, puts it: "Germination matters, but it is not the number that decides your season. Vigour is, and vigour is the first thing you lose as a lot ages or as the spring turns against you." That's a big deal for farmers. A seed lot can test perfect in the lab and still disappoint in the field. Vigour is what makes the difference when conditions aren't ideal. ### From Space Tech to Farm Fields The technology was developed with support from the European Space Agency Business Incubation Centre (ESA BIC) Noordwijk. Yes, space tech for seeds. It's already undergone seven external trials, including validation by Vertify, and the company operates its own R&D and production facility in Nijmegen. Erica van Eeghen from VP Capital said, "The most impactful innovations are often the ones that improve the foundations of a system. Seeds are exactly that foundation." ### What's Next? With this funding, Gravity Gardens plans to bring its dry seed activation to market, targeting European arable and horticultural crops. If it works at scale, it could make stronger crop establishment accessible to many more farmers while using fewer natural resources. That's a win for farmers, a win for the environment, and a win for anyone who eats food. Not bad for a startup founded in 2024.
