### The Problem with Traditional Seed Priming
Seed activation isn't new. For decades, seed companies have known that treating seeds before planting helps them emerge faster and more uniformly. But the conventional method—priming—is wet. It involves hydrating seeds, keeping them under controlled conditions, then drying them again. That process is expensive, complicated, and only makes economic sense for high-value crops like vegetables and flowers. For staples like wheat or corn, it's never been viable.
### A Dry Solution That Cuts Costs
Gravity Gardens removes water from the equation entirely. No hydration, no drying, no coating. That changes the economics completely. "What we have is dry, which takes those costs out," says founder and CEO Paulino Valdés. "Cheap enough for field crops, and aimed at the thing that actually decides the season." That thing is vigor—how quickly and strongly a crop establishes itself in the field. Germination matters, but vigor is what makes or breaks a harvest.
### Backed by Big Names
The round was led by VP Capital, Brightlands Venture Partners, and Graduate Ventures, with support from EFRO regional development funding. Earlier backing came from StartLife and a Rabobank innovation loan, bringing total funding to over €3 million ($3.2 million). The technology was even developed with help from the European Space Agency's Business Incubation Centre.

Gravity Gardens has already run seven external trials, including validation by Vertify. They operate their own R&D and production facility in Nijmegen. If their tech delivers, it could make seed activation accessible for a huge range of crops, not just the high-value ones.
