### A Seed Revolution Without Water or Chemicals What if you could boost crop yields without a single drop of water or any chemicals? That's the promise from Gravity Gardens, a Dutch AgTech startup that just raised €2.6 million (about $2.8 million) to scale its dry seed activation technology. Based in Nijmegen, the company is tackling a problem that's plagued agriculture for decades: how to make seeds perform better in the field. Their solution? A completely dry process that leaves no coating on the seed and uses no water or chemicals. ### Why Conventional Seed Priming Falls Short Seed priming isn't new. For over 40 years, companies have hydrated seeds, held them under controlled conditions, and then dried them again. This process, known as wet priming, improves germination and uniformity. But it comes with serious drawbacks. - It's expensive, with handling constraints and capacity limits at every step. - The economics only work for high-value crops like vegetables and flowers. - For most field crops, seed activation has never been economically viable. "The problem was never whether it works," the company explained. "The problem is what it takes to do it." ### The Dry Difference: Vigour Over Germination Gravity Gardens' technology removes water from the equation entirely. No hydration stage, nothing to dry off. That changes everything. "Priming has been the industry's answer for forty years and it is a good answer, but it is a wet one," said Paulino Valdés, founder and CEO. "What we have is dry, which takes those costs out. Cheap enough for field crops, and aimed at the thing that actually decides the season." That "thing" is vigour—how fast and strongly a crop establishes itself in the ground. While germination is important, vigour is what determines whether a seed lot thrives or disappoints in the field. > "Every seed company in Europe has a seed lot sitting in storage that germinates at grade A quality on the bench and then disappoints in the field. Vigour is." — Paulino Valdés ### Backed by Investors and Space Tech Founded in 2024 by Valdés and Robin Le Vigouroux, Gravity Gardens has already completed seven external trials, including validation by Vertify. The technology was developed with support from the European Space Agency Business Incubation Centre (ESA BIC) Noordwijk. The recent seed round combines equity investment with EFRO regional development funding. Investors include VP Capital, Brightlands Venture Partners, and Graduate Ventures, along with private backers. This follows earlier support from StartLife and a Rabobank innovation loan, bringing total funding to over €3 million (about $3.2 million). "The most impactful innovations are often the ones that improve the foundations of a system," said Erica van Eeghen of VP Capital. "Seeds are exactly that foundation." ### What This Means for Farmers If Gravity Gardens can deliver on its promise, the implications are huge. A dry, chemical-free seed treatment that's cheap enough for field crops could make stronger crop establishment accessible to far more farmers. And it would do so while using fewer natural resources. For an industry facing pressure to become more sustainable, that's not just a nice-to-have. It's a potential game-changer.
