Gravity Gardens, a Dutch AgTech startup, raises €2.6M to scale a dry, chemical-free seed activation technology that boosts crop vigour without water or chemicals.

### A Dry Approach to Seed Activation Imagine a seed treatment that doesn't use a single drop of water, no chemicals, and leaves no coating behind. That's exactly what Gravity Gardens, a Nijmegen-based AgTech startup, is bringing to market. They've just secured €2.6 million (about $2.8 million) in Seed funding to scale their dry seed activation technology for European arable and horticultural crops. ### The Problem with Traditional Seed Priming Conventional seed priming is a wet process. It involves hydrating the seed, holding it under controlled conditions, and then drying it again. This introduces handling constraints, capacity limits, and costs at every step. As a result, the economics have only ever worked for high-value vegetable and flower seeds. For the vast majority of crops by volume, seed activation has never been an option. Gravity Gardens removes water from the equation. No hydration stage to control, nothing to dry off afterwards. That changes everything. Their process is dry, which cuts out those costs and makes it affordable for field crops. Plus, it's aimed at what really matters: vigour—how fast and how strongly a crop establishes itself in the ground. ### Why Vigour Matters More Than Germination Paulino Valdés, Founder and CEO of Gravity Gardens, puts it bluntly: "Every seed company in Europe has a seed lot sitting in storage that germinates at grade A quality on the bench and then disappoints in the field. Germination matters, but it is not the number that decides your season. Vigour is, and vigour is the first thing you lose as a lot ages or as the spring turns against you." Traditional priming has been the industry's answer for forty years, but it's a wet one. The cost and complications mean it only ever made sense for a handful of high-value crops. Gravity Gardens' dry process takes those costs out, making it cheap enough for field crops and targeted at the thing that actually decides the season. That combination hasn't existed before. ### Backing from Investors and Development Funds The round combines equity investment with EFRO regional development funding. It was supported by VP Capital, Brightlands Venture Partners (BVP), and Graduate Ventures, alongside a group of private investors. This Seed round follows earlier backing from StartLife and a Rabobank innovation loan, bringing the startup's total raised to more than €3 million (about $3.2 million). Erica van Eeghen, Senior Manager Ventures at VP Capital, said: "The most impactful innovations are often the ones that improve the foundations of a system. Seeds are exactly that foundation. Gravity Gardens has developed a technology that could make stronger crop establishment accessible to many more farmers while using fewer natural resources. That is what makes this investment so compelling." ### Proven Technology and Partnerships Founded in 2024 by Paulino Valdés and Robin Le Vigouroux, Gravity Gardens has already completed seven external trials, including validation experiments by Vertify. The company operates its own R&D and production facility in Nijmegen and runs active programs with Vertify, HLB, Oost NL, and Foodvalley. Through these partnerships, they accessed an SME Innovation Voucher. Their technology was also developed with support from the European Space Agency Business Incubation Centre (ESA BIC) Noordwijk. ### What's Next for Gravity Gardens? With this funding, Gravity Gardens plans to scale its dry seed activation technology and bring it to more farmers across Europe. By eliminating water and chemicals, they're not just making seed treatment more affordable—they're making it more sustainable.
