Gravity Gardens raises $2.8M to scale a dry, chemical-free seed activation tech that could finally make seed treatment affordable for commodity crops β no water, no chemicals, no coating.
### The Seed Problem Nobody Talks About
Every spring, farmers across Europe plant seeds that look perfect on paper. Grade A germination rates. Great test results. Then the field happens. And suddenly that perfect seed lot just... doesn't perform the way it should.
That gap between what a seed does in a lab and what it does in actual soil is where Gravity Gardens wants to live. The Nijmegen-based AgTech startup just closed a β¬2.6 million Seed round β roughly $2.8 million β to scale a seed activation technology that uses no water, no chemicals, and leaves zero coating on the seed.
That last part matters more than you might think.
### Why Wet Priming Has Always Been a Rich Farmer's Game
Seed priming isn't new. The industry has known for decades that treating a seed before planting helps it emerge faster and more evenly. The problem? Conventional priming is wet. You hydrate the seed, hold it under controlled conditions, then dry it again.
That process introduces handling constraints, capacity limits, and costs at every single step. According to Gravity Gardens, the economics have only ever worked for high-value vegetable and flower seeds. For the vast majority of crops by volume, seed activation has simply never been an option.

### The Dry Difference
Gravity Gardens removes water from the equation entirely. No hydration stage to control. Nothing to dry off afterward. That changes the cost structure completely β cheap enough, they claim, for field crops.
The company says its technology targets vigour: how fast and how strongly a crop establishes itself once it's in the ground. That's different from germination, which is what most seed treatments focus on.

### Built With Space-Age Support
Founded in 2024 by ValdΓ©s and Robin Le Vigouroux, Gravity Gardens developed its technology with help from the European Space Agency Business Incubation Centre in Noordwijk. The company has run seven external trials, including validation work with Vertify, and operates its own R&D and production facility in Nijmegen.
"The most impactful innovations are often the ones that improve the foundations of a system," said Erica van Eeghen of VP Capital. "Seeds are exactly that foundation."
