Dutch Startup's Dry Seed Tech Just Raised $2.8M to Fix Farming's Oldest Problem

Gravity Gardens, a Dutch AgTech startup, raised €2.6M ($2.8M) to scale its dry, chemical-free seed activation tech. The process improves crop vigour without water or chemicals.

### A Dry Approach to Seed Activation You know that feeling when you plant something and wait, hoping it'll actually grow? Now imagine doing that on a commercial scale, with thousands of acres depending on it. That's the high-stakes world farmers live in every season. And a Dutch startup called Gravity Gardens just raised €2.6 million (about $2.8 million) to make that gamble a whole lot safer. Based in Nijmegen, Gravity Gardens has developed a chemical-free seed activation technology that's completely dry. No water. No chemicals. No coating left on the seed. Just a process that helps crops establish themselves faster and stronger once they're in the ground. The Seed round combines equity investment with EFRO regional development funding. It was backed by VP Capital, Brightlands Venture Partners (BVP), and Graduate Ventures, along with a group of private investors. This follows earlier support from StartLife and a Rabobank innovation loan, bringing total funding to over €3 million (around $3.2 million). ### Why Wet Priming Has Always Been a Problem Seed activation isn't a new idea. Seed companies have known for decades that treating a seed lot properly helps it emerge faster and more evenly. The catch? Conventional priming is wet. You hydrate the seed, hold it under controlled conditions, then dry it again. That introduces handling constraints, capacity limits, and costs at every step. As a result, the economics have only ever worked for high-value vegetable and flower seeds. For the vast majority of crops by volume, seed activation has never been an option. It's just too expensive and complicated. Gravity Gardens removes water from the equation entirely. No hydration stage to control. Nothing to dry off afterward. A seed lot can germinate perfectly in testing and still disappoint in the field. What actually decides a season is vigour—how fast and how strongly a crop establishes itself once it's in the ground. "Every seed company in Europe has a seed lot sitting in storage that germinates at grade A quality on the bench and then disappoints in the field," Valdés says. "Germination matters, but it is not the number that decides your season. Vigour is, and vigour is the first thing you lose as a lot ages or as the spring turns against you." Gravity Gardens claims its technology targets exactly that. It stimulates the plant's natural power, helping it emerge faster and stronger, even in tough conditions. ### The Technology Has Been Put to the Test The company reports that its technology has undergone seven external trials, including validation experiments conducted by Vertify. It operates its own research, development, and production facility in Nijmegen and runs active programs with Vertify, HLB, Oost NL, and Foodvalley. Through these partnerships, the company accessed an SME Innovation Voucher. Founded in 2024 by Paulino Valdés (CEO) and Robin Le Vigouroux (CTO), Gravity Gardens developed its technology with support from the European Space Agency Business Incubation Centre (ESA BIC) Noordwijk. That's right—space technology helping seeds grow better here on Earth. ### What This Means for Farmers If this technology delivers on its promise, it could be a game-changer for European agriculture. For the first time, seed activation could be affordable for field crops like wheat, barley, and corn—not just high-value vegetables and flowers. That means stronger crop establishment, better yields, and more efficient use of natural resources. Erica van Eeghen, Senior Manager Ventures at VP Capital, put it well: "The most impactful innovations are often the ones that improve the foundations of a system. Seeds are exactly that foundation. Gravity Gardens has developed a technology that could make stronger crop establishment accessible to many more farmers while using fewer natural resources. That is what makes this investment so compelling." With this new funding, Gravity Gardens plans to scale its technology and bring it to market. If they succeed, it could change how we think about seed treatment—not just in Europe, but around the world.
