The Drone Company Betting on Reliability Over Hype

Károly Ludvigh, CEO of ABZ Innovation, shares how his company built reliable agricultural drones from scratch, why farmers are embracing tech, and how the war in Ukraine reshaped Europe's drone industry.

Károly Ludvigh didn't start out to build drones. He was a tech journalist, tinkering with drone systems in his basement over a decade ago. Today, he's the CEO and co-founder of ABZ Innovation, one of Europe's leading manufacturers of heavy-duty agricultural and industrial drones. Based in Hungary, ABZ designs and builds drones for spraying, spreading, cleaning, and specialized industrial applications. With operations in more than 40 countries and a newly opened manufacturing facility in Szentendre that stands among Europe's largest civilian drone factories, ABZ is at the heart of Europe's fast-growing drone and AgTech ecosystem. ### Why ABZ Built Its Own Drones When ABZ set out to offer drone-based crop spraying, it discovered that the products available on the market simply couldn't deliver the reliability a sustainable business required. So the company decided to build its own drones from the ground up. "We needed something that would work day in and day out, not just in perfect conditions," Károly explains. That decision set the tone for everything ABZ does: simplicity and reliability over hype. ### Farmers Are Embracing Tech More Than You Think It's easy to assume that farmers, often seen as working in a traditional sector, would be slow to adopt new technology. But according to Károly, the opposite is true. "Farmers are practical people. If a tool helps them get the job done faster and more efficiently, they'll use it," he says. Drones are transforming day-to-day work, from spraying crops to spreading seeds, and farmers are embracing the change. ### The War in Ukraine Changed Everything The war in Ukraine has reshaped Europe's drone industry in profound ways. Manufacturing capacity has expanded, investment appetite has grown, and there's a strong push to build more technology locally. "The war made everyone realize how dependent we were on foreign supply chains," Károly notes. "Now there's a real drive for European technological sovereignty in drones." ABZ has felt this shift firsthand, scaling its production to meet growing demand. ### Dual-Use vs. Agriculture: Where ABZ Draws the Line While ABZ's drones could have dual-use applications, the company remains focused on agricultural and civilian industrial use cases. "We're not a defense company," Károly says firmly. "Our mission is to help farmers and industrial operators do their work more efficiently and sustainably." That focus has allowed ABZ to build deep expertise in its niche. ### Scaling Across 40+ Countries with Wildly Different Rules Scaling drone technology across more than 40 markets means navigating a patchwork of regulations. Each country has its own rules for UAVs, and what's allowed in one place might be restricted in another. "It's a constant challenge," Károly admits. "But we've learned to adapt and work closely with regulators." Looking ahead, he sees drones becoming a routine part of agriculture within five to ten years, handling everything from precision spraying to crop monitoring. ### The Bottom Line ABZ Innovation's story is a reminder that sometimes the best way to solve a problem is to build the solution yourself. By prioritizing reliability over flashy features, ABZ has carved out a strong position in Europe's drone industry. And as the sector continues to evolve, one thing is clear: the future of farming will increasingly take to the skies.
