Breedr, a platform creating digital records for cattle, raised $27M in Series B funding. The investment, led by Partech, will expand its data-driven network for ranchers amid a shrinking herd and rising beef demand.
You know how we talk about farm-to-table? Well, this is taking it to a whole new level. Breedr, a livestock tech platform that started in the UK, just secured a massive $27 million Series B funding round. They’re on a mission to give every single cow a digital passport that follows it from birth all the way to your supermarket shelf.
It's a big deal because the beef industry is at a crossroads. Demand is climbing, but the U.S. cattle herd is the smallest it's been since 1951. Producers are squeezed, and the old paper-based ways just aren't cutting it anymore.
This latest cash injection, led by Partech's impact fund with help from Latitude and Outsiders Fund, brings Breedr's total funding to a hefty $46.6 million. That's a serious vote of confidence.
### The Big Idea Behind Breedr
So, what does Breedr actually do? Think of it as a closed-loop system for cattle. It combines three things into one neat package:
- A livestock management app that tracks each animal's health, weight, and history.
- A data-verified marketplace where ranchers can buy and sell cattle with full transparency.
- An embedded finance fund to help with cattle purchases.
The founder, Ian Wheal, grew up on a cattle farm in Australia. He saw the inefficiencies firsthand. “We built Breedr to bring value back to the people who raise the cattle,” he says. “The industry has to get more value from every animal, and you cannot do that on paper.”
He's not wrong. When you can track an animal's entire life story, you can raise better quality beef, reduce waste, and yes, even cut down on emissions. It turns out that smarter farming is also more sustainable farming.
### A Trend in AgTech Investing
Breedr's success isn't happening in a vacuum. There's a real wave of investment flooding into technologies that digitize agriculture. Just this year, we've seen millions pour into related startups:
- $1.8 million for Sweden's Volta Greentech and their methane-reducing cattle feed.
- About $500,000 for UK-based EcoNomad Solutions working on farm waste-to-energy.
- $7.7 million for Greece's Wikifarmer and their AI-powered trading platform.
- $21.8 million for Lithuania's Saltz to scale a digital food marketplace.
It adds up to a clear signal: the future of farming is data-driven. Arnaud Minvielle from Partech put it perfectly, calling Breedr “the transaction layer for one of the world's largest unmodernised markets.” Every time an animal changes hands on their platform, Breedr earns a bit. That commercial engine is directly tied to a better environmental outcome.
### From London to Texas, With Ambition
Founded in London in 2018, Breedr is now headquartered in Texas, with operations across the U.S., UK, and Australia. Their ambition is huge—to become the system of record for every major livestock-producing region on the planet. With over 1.3 billion cattle in the world, that's no small goal.
But they're making serious headway. More than two million cattle are already on the platform, with close to $500 million worth of livestock transacted this year alone. Their customers range from small family ranches to massive operations handling over 100,000 animals annually.
Ian makes a striking point: “If you have bought beef from a major retailer in the United States or UK, there is a good chance it has moved through a Breedr-powered supply chain.”
That's the quiet transformation happening right now. This new funding round is all about expanding those connected supply chains globally. It's about making sure every animal tells its own story and, crucially, that every rancher gets paid fairly for the quality they work so hard to produce. In an industry facing historic challenges, that kind of innovation isn't just nice to have—it's essential.
