Danish AI startup Velatir just raised $5.4M in two weeks to fuel European expansion. Here's how this infrastructure player is betting on sovereign cloud.
Velatir, an Odense-based AI infrastructure startup, just announced it has secured $5.4 million in new funding to "triple down" on its European expansion and "compete for the best talent" in the region. That's a big deal for a company that only officially launched six months ago.
What's even more striking? The round was completed in just two weeks. That kind of speed tells you investors see something special here.
### Who's backing Velatir?
The round was co-led by new investor Spintop Ventures and existing investor Ugly Duckling Ventures. Existing VC investors Norrsken Evolve and new angels Jan Oberhauser (n8n) and Thomas Visti (Universal Robots/MiR) also participated. The Danish Export and Investment Fund, EIFO, provided a match loan.
So you've got a mix of seasoned European investors and successful founders throwing their weight behind this. That's a solid signal.
### What does Velatir actually do?
Founded in 2025 by Elias Sørensen (CTO), Christian Møller (COO), Andreas Paulli (CPO), and Michael Sørensen (CEO), Velatir is building what it calls the default integration layer for compliant AI adoption in Europe.
Think of it this way: as AI gets smarter, it gets harder to control. Data leakage risks are climbing fast, especially with agentic products that act on their own. Velatir's platform plugs in horizontally across everything AI touches—endpoints, vendors, agents, employees, and the infrastructure they run on.
It's not another tool you adopt alongside your AI stack. It's the infrastructure layer through which everything flows.
The platform ties together security, policy enforcement, usage tracking, and discovery across employees and AI agents. You get real-time visibility into AI usage across devices and browsers, plus insights into the cost and maturity of each use case. And you can implement control guardrails across all systems from one central location.
### The sovereign cloud angle
Here's where Velatir is making a bold bet: the entire platform runs on European-owned and hosted infrastructure. They've deliberately opted out of American hyperscalers.
"'Sovereign cloud' is a common phrase, and it often means American platforms with a European label," said Christian Møller, COO and co-founder. "We built Velatir on European-owned and hosted infrastructure from the very beginning. It is the harder path, but the only viable one for us."
That's a meaningful differentiator, especially with the EU AI Act changing how companies handle compliance.
### Why this matters for European AI
Michael Sørensen, CEO and co-founder, put it plainly: "We're here to win. Winning means helping European companies stay competitive in the age of AI and protecting Europe's future competitiveness. Europe has been longing for more European infrastructure champions."
Since raising its pre-Seed round and officially launching, Velatir says its sales numbers have exploded. That's the kind of traction that gets investors excited.
For US readers, this is worth watching. The European AI infrastructure space is heating up, and Velatir is positioning itself as a homegrown alternative to American cloud giants. Whether they can sustain that momentum remains to be seen, but the early signs are promising.
