Creandum's $750M Fund: The AI Bet That Could Mint Europe's Next Unicorns

Creandum closes its largest fund ever at $750M to back early-stage startups, with a focus on AI. The Swedish VC joins a wave of European fundraising and expands its US presence.

Stockholm-based venture capital firm Creandum just closed its largest fund ever: Creandum VIII, a €668 million ($750 million) vehicle to back early-stage tech startups from pre-Seed to Series A. That's a big jump from its previous €500 million fund, which closed in June 2024. The new fund will support around 30 investments over the next two years, with a sharp focus on opportunities emerging from AI. Creandum's partner Peter Specht said, "We continue to focus on the early stage. 1 in 6 companies we've backed has become a $1B+ company. We have tripled our team in San Francisco in the past 12 months. We support founders globally from day 1." ### A Wave of European VC Fundraising Creandum VIII is part of a broader surge in European venture capital. This year alone, London-based QuantumLight closed a €432 million second fund, Berlin's Earlybird VC secured €360 million for Fund VIII, and Seedcamp raised €279 million across two vehicles. In Sweden, Norrsken Evolve closed a €62 million pre-Seed fund, while Turbine Capital finalised a €54 million vehicle targeting Nordic DeepTech startups. Across comparable announcements, disclosed fund sizes total about €1.64 billion—rising to €2.31 billion when you include Creandum VIII. That's a lot of dry powder flowing into European startups. ### From Spotify to Lovable: Creandum's Track Record Founded in 2003 by Staffan Helgesson, Creandum has offices in Stockholm, London, Berlin, and San Francisco. Before Creandum, Helgesson founded Startupfactory, an investment firm focused on mobile internet businesses. The firm is known for early bets on companies like Spotify, Klarna, iZettle, Depop, Bolt, and Trade Republic. More recently, its portfolio has expanded to include AI-powered software development startup Lovable, AI image-generation company Black Forest Labs, cloud infrastructure startup Modal, and AI accounting platform Rillet. Clearly, they know how to spot a winner early. ### Betting on AI and a Shifting Landscape Creandum VIII arrives at a time when AI is reshaping established tech markets. The firm believes rapid changes in software development, enterprise tech, and digital infrastructure are opening doors for startups to challenge incumbents. In its announcement, Creandum reflected on past periods of uncertainty—the dotcom crash aftermath, the 2008 financial crisis, and the 2022 VC correction—and noted that "the pattern has repeated for over two decades: the biggest companies get founded when the ground is shifting. And the ground has never shifted like it is shifting today." Despite the AI focus, Creandum plans to keep a generalist strategy rather than limiting the fund to a specific sector. The firm is also strengthening its US presence, having tripled its West Coast team over the past two years to reach founders across markets. > "After almost a decade at Creandum, this is a proud and exciting moment. Grateful for the team and my partners, and just so excited about the incredible founders out there to back," added Specht. With $750 million in fresh capital and a nose for unicorns, Creandum is poised to make a significant impact on the startup ecosystem on both sides of the Atlantic.
