Berlin-based Moss has joined the unicorn club with a $32.5M Series C round. Here's how their Finance AI platform is giving finance teams more control, not less.
Moss, a Berlin-based FinTech startup that helps European small and medium-sized businesses manage their spending, just pulled off something pretty impressive. The company closed a $32.5 million Series C funding round (converted from โฌ30 million) at a valuation north of $1.08 billion (โฌ1 billion). That officially makes them a unicorn โ a rare breed in the startup world.
The round was led by Portage, with existing backer Cherry Ventures also participating. It's a big vote of confidence in what Moss is building, especially at a time when investors are being pickier about where they put their money.
### What Moss Actually Does
Founded in 2019 by Ante Spittler, Anton Rummel, Ferdinand Meyer, and Stephan Haslebacher, Moss isn't just another corporate card company. It's an all-in-one spend management platform built for modern finance teams. Think of it as your finance department's control center: it brings together corporate cards, invoice management, and reimbursements with real-time budgets, smart approvals, and automated accounting.
What sets them apart is their push into what they call "Finance AI." According to CEO Ante Spittler, the goal is to let customers configure AI agents for every finance job โ while keeping humans in the driver's seat. "This is Finance AI, shaped by you," Spittler said in a LinkedIn post announcing the round.
That's not just marketing talk. The company surveyed 471 finance leaders and found that 48% ranked control as their top priority, while only 6% want full autonomy. So Moss is building AI that prepares the work, shows its reasoning down to the ledger account, and doesn't take any consequential action without the team's sign-off.
### The Numbers Behind the Hype
Moss has grown to serve more than 5,000 businesses across Germany, the UK, the Netherlands, and Austria. They're generating over $75 million in annual recurring revenue (converted from โฌ70 million). Spittler says their AI agents help customers process more than 2 million transactions each month.
This latest round comes four years after their Series B, which raised $81 million (converted from โฌ75 million) at a valuation of over $540 million (โฌ500 million). That round was led by Tiger Global Management.
### Security and Compliance: The Boring Stuff That Matters
For a company handling money, trust is everything. Moss is a BaFin-regulated financial institution under the PSD2 framework and holds ISO/IEC 27001:2022 certification. They're also compliant with the Digital Operational Resilience Act (DORA).
On the security front, they've stacked the deck: multi-factor authentication, biometrics, the 4-Eyes Principle (where two people must approve a transaction), and single sign-on for organization-wide access management. Data is protected with TLS 1.2+ encryption in transit and AES-256 at rest, hosted exclusively on Google Cloud Platform in Frankfurt, Germany.
### What This Means for the Market
Moss's unicorn status is a signal that European FinTech is still very much alive, even when the broader funding environment has cooled off. It also shows that AI in finance isn't just about automation โ it's about giving finance teams superpowers while keeping their hands on the wheel.
Cherry Ventures summed it up nicely: "The next chapter is Finance AI shaped by the people who use it: AI that prepares the work, shows its reasoning down to the ledger account, and takes no consequential action without the team's sign-off."
For finance leaders watching from across the pond, Moss is proof that the future of finance is being built with a distinctly human touch โ and that's something worth paying attention to.
