Paris-based Apolownia raises $1.06M to scale high-integrity coastal restoration and blue carbon projects, aiming to set a new standard in the environmental market.

When you think about fighting climate change, you probably picture solar panels or electric cars. But there's a quieter, arguably more powerful player in this story: our coastlines. And one Paris-based startup, Apolownia, just closed a seed round that's turning heads in the environmental market. The company, which focuses on restoring coastal ecosystems like mangroves and seagrass meadows, has raised $1.06 million (€1 million). The round was backed by LITA, Bpifrance, and a group of business angels. It's not the biggest check you'll see this year, but the strategy behind it could be a blueprint for how we tackle carbon removal at scale. ### The Big Idea: High-Integrity Carbon Projects Here's the thing about carbon offsets: not all of them are created equal. Many companies have been burned by projects that promised big but delivered little. Apolownia is betting that the future lies in what they call "high-integrity" projects—ones that are transparent, measurable, and auditable. "At a time when everyone is chasing efficiency and technology has never been more accessible, it is presence on the ground that makes the difference," says Théo Derache, CEO and co-founder. "By mastering the entire chain, we are our clients' single point of contact, from the field to the measurement of impact." That's a bold claim, but it's backed by a unique approach. Instead of just funding projects or buying credits, Apolownia runs the whole show—from identifying the right sites to long-term monitoring. ### Why Coastal Restoration Matters Let's talk about why this matters. Mangroves and coastal wetlands are carbon-sequestering powerhouses. They can store up to four times more carbon per acre than tropical rainforests. Plus, they protect coastlines from erosion and storm surges, which is becoming increasingly critical as sea levels rise. Apolownia's flagship project, BlueRizon, is a mangrove restoration effort in Indonesia targeting more than 4,000 hectares (about 9,884 acres). That's roughly the size of 7,500 football fields. The project is being developed with local partners, and the official launch is slated for the third quarter of 2026. The scale is impressive, but the human element is what really stands out. More than 3,000 people are already involved in the implementation. Ultimately, the project could benefit over 100,000 people through climate resilience, erosion control, and local economic development. ### Tech Meets Ground Game What makes Apolownia different is how they blend cutting-edge tech with old-fashioned fieldwork. On the tech side, they're using: - Satellite remote sensing and geospatial analysis - Drones and 3D modeling - Advanced MRV (Measurement, Reporting, and Verification) systems - AI-powered digital tools But they pair that with local teams on the ground, community engagement, and work on land-tenure and governance issues. It's a hybrid model that addresses one of the biggest criticisms of carbon projects: the disconnect between remote sensing data and what's actually happening on the ground. ### The Shift in Corporate Climate Goals The timing feels right. Companies are no longer just trying to reduce emissions—they're being pushed to go further. Regulatory changes and rising expectations mean they need to sequester residual carbon and restore ecosystems to meet targets like those set by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). "Driven by regulatory change and rising expectations, they are looking for very high-integrity carbon projects: transparent, measurable, auditable, additional and durable," the company notes. That's a mouthful, but it translates to a simple demand: prove it works. ### What's Next for Apolownia With this fresh capital, Apolownia plans to scale its model, push forward on BlueRizon, and strengthen its structuring and deployment capacity. The goal is to become an international benchmark for high-integrity restoration, expanding from mangroves to seagrass meadows, coastal peatlands, and coral reefs. It's an ambitious vision. But in a world where trust in carbon markets has taken a hit, having a company that's willing to get its hands dirty—literally—might be exactly what we need.
