When you think about climate tech, your mind probably jumps to solar panels or electric vehicles. But there's a quieter, messier, and arguably more powerful player emerging: coastal restoration. And one Paris-based startup just got a serious financial vote of confidence to scale its work. Apolownia, a company focused on rebuilding high-integrity coastal ecosystems, has closed its first Seed round at approximately $1.1 million. The funding came from a mix of institutional backers like LITA and Bpifrance, along with a group of business angels and individual investors who clearly see the long-term value in blue carbon. ### Why Coastal Restoration Matters More Than Ever Here's the thing: the environmental market is going through a massive shift. Companies aren't just being told to cut their emissions anymore. They're being pushed to go further, to actually sequester residual carbon and restore ecosystems to hit targets like SBTi (Science Based Targets initiative). That's a tall order. And it's creating a demand for what Apolownia calls "high-integrity carbon projects." In plain English, that means projects that are transparent, measurable, auditable, and actually durable. No greenwashing, no vague promises—just real, verifiable impact. "At a time when everyone is chasing efficiency and technology has never been more accessible, it is presence on the ground that makes the difference," said Théo Derache, CEO and co-founder of Apolownia. "By mastering the entire chain, we are our clients' single point of contact, from the field to the measurement of impact." ### The Tech + Dirt Approach Apolownia's model is interesting because it refuses to pick a side in the tech-versus-fieldwork debate. Instead, it blends both. On the tech side, they're using satellite remote sensing, geospatial analysis, drones, 3D modeling, and AI-powered monitoring (MRV, in the jargon). On the ground, they have local teams handling community engagement, biodiversity, land-tenure issues, and benefit-sharing. This hybrid approach addresses a huge problem in the sector: fragmentation. Too often, one company identifies a site, another structures the project, and a third handles monitoring. That leads to miscommunication, delays, and projects that don't quite deliver. Apolownia centralizes the whole chain—from site identification to long-term follow-up—to keep quality high and results predictable. ### BlueRizon: The Flagship Project Their main showcase is BlueRizon, a mangrove restoration project in Indonesia. We're talking about a massive effort targeting more than 9,880 acres of mangroves. The project is being developed with local partners, and the official launch is slated for the third quarter of 2026. The scale is hard to wrap your head around. More than 3,000 people are already involved in the implementation. And the potential ripple effect is enormous: over 100,000 people could benefit through climate resilience, erosion control, adaptation to sea-level rise, and local economic development. ### What's Next for Apolownia? With this fresh capital, the company plans to scale its model, push BlueRizon forward, and strengthen its structuring and deployment capacity. They're also doubling down on science, technology, and monitoring—the tools that make their projects credible. Long-term, Apolownia wants to become an international benchmark for high-integrity restoration. They're not just stopping at mangroves either. The roadmap includes seagrass meadows, coastal peatlands, and coral reefs. It's a bold vision. But with the regulatory pressure mounting and companies genuinely looking for ways to prove their climate credentials, the timing feels right. Coastal restoration isn't just a nice-to-have anymore. It's becoming a business imperative. And Apolownia is positioning itself right at the center of that shift.
