The round was led by Crane Venture Partners, with participation from PXN Ventures, AIP Seed, and angel investors including former DeepMind researchers.

### Riding the 2026 AI Infrastructure Wave
Expanse's Seed round lands right in the middle of a broader investment surge. In 2026 alone, European AI infrastructure startups have pulled in roughly $2.1 billion (โฌ1.92 billion), according to EU-Startups. That total is heavily skewed by London-based Nscale's massive $1.8 billion (โฌ1.7 billion) Series C for vertically integrated compute infrastructure.
Other notable rounds include:
- London-based Callosum raising $92 million (โฌ85.4 million) to route workloads across different AI models and chips
- Helsinki-based Verda securing $108 million (โฌ100 million) for AI cloud infrastructure
- Vienna's Ora Computing pulling in $3.8 million (โฌ3.5 million) for model compression and inference efficiency
- Switzerland's AI Infrastructure Capital AG with $17 million (โฌ16 million)
- Danish startup Velatir with $5.4 million (โฌ5 million)
- Prague cloud platform Zerops with $1.8 million (โฌ1.7 million)
The UK is particularly well-represented, with Nscale and Callosum leading the charge. Callosum, like Expanse, is building software to allocate AI workloads more efficiently across available compute.

### The Team Behind the Tech
Expanse was founded in 2025 by four University of Edinburgh graduate engineers who previously built and operated large-scale compute infrastructure across quantitative finance and national supercomputing facilities. While at the Edinburgh Parallel Computing Centre (EPCC), co-founder Ismaeel Bashir developed a multimodal HPC resource prediction system that predicted resource requirements across HPC workloads.
Together with co-founders Nikodem Bieniek, Eren Mendi, and Yafet Melake, Bashir recognized that even the world's most sophisticated compute environments still relied on manual estimation to allocate resources efficiently. That's the gap Expanse is filling.
