Danish startup Perplant just raised $1.07 million to put smart cameras on tractors. The goal? Slash herbicide use and help farmers make more money. It's a big deal for sustainable agriculture. ### What Perplant Does Perplant builds an AI-powered camera sensor that mounts on a tractor's roof. Think of it as giving the tractor a pair of eagle eyes. As the tractor drives across the field, the AI scans every plant in real time. It spots weeds and decides exactly where to spray. No more drenching entire fields with chemicals. "When our AI drives across the field, it documents the field's variation, every single plant, and groundwater-sensitive areas," said Rasmus Emil Hansen, CEO and co-founder. "It removes the bureaucracy for the farmer and ensures that we can shut off the sprayer precisely over groundwater-sensitive areas with centimeter precision." The system cuts herbicide use by up to 90% and fertilizer use by 30%. For an average 500-acre farm, that means an extra $38,500 in profit each year. Farmers recoup their investment in just one season.  ### Why This Matters Traditional satellite imagery gives a resolution of 30 to 100 feet. Perplant's sensors deliver 0.8 to 4 inches. That's like comparing a blurry photo to a high-definition one. The system captures actual photos of each plant, creating a verified record for authorities, banks, and insurers. Perplant has already mapped over 500,000 acres across Europe. That's nine times more data than all agricultural drones in Denmark combined. It's the largest precision dataset in the Nordics. "No satellite or drone can deliver this level of detail at a scale that truly moves anything for the global food chain," said Emil Hansen. "By making every tractor an intelligent data center, we create the factual foundation that both farmers and authorities desperately lack to document the green effort." ### The Funding Story The $1.07 million round came from private angel investors and industry leaders with deep agriculture and retail experience. The Export and Investment Fund of Denmark provided institutional financing. Grants from the European Space Agency and Innovation Fund Denmark also helped. Founded in 2022 by Rasmus Emil Hansen and Sumod Nandanwar, Perplant now employs 15 people. The company operates in Denmark, the UK, the Netherlands, Belgium, Norway, Poland, Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania, Spain, Ireland, and Chile.
